KZ650 SR '77 have fuel accelerator pump? was created by CandyBlue
My uncle asked me to tuneup his KZ 650 SR that says 1977 on the triple tree. There are very cheap pod filters on the airbox side, and I'm having a hell of a time getting the mixture right. So far I have advised him to try to find an original air box, or high-quality K&N pods with greater suction. But at looking at the carbs as compared to the service manual, there is no accelerator pump whatsoever. I'm wondering If the 77 KZ650 didn't have an accelerator pump? If anyone could clue me in to that it would be a big help thank you.

First - there is no such thing as 1977 KZ650-SR. The KZ650-D1 (the first year of the KZ650-SR) was made in 1978.

Take a look at the steering neck. It will have a frame number stamped into it. If that number starts with KZ650C it is a "C" model. If it starts with KZ650B it is a "B" model. If it starts with KZ650D it is a "D" model which is an SR. Check that frame number against the chart at models.kz650.info/index.htm to determine the year of the bike. Then check the engine number, which is next to the oil filler cap, against that same chart to ensure the engine is the same year as the frame. If you find it is a 1978 model it may have 24mm carbs or 22 mm carbs depending upon the model.

If it is a 1977 model it would not have come from the factory with an accelerator pump because no 1977 KZ650 came with an accelerator pump. Ed

Howdy. The date of mfg on the vin label isn't necessarily the model year. same as with cars.
The KZ650 came with various versions of the VM24 carburetors. some 77 models even came with VM22s.
According to the diagrams at Partzilla the 78 650-D1 SR did not have an accelerator pump, but the 78 D1A SR did have it.

ps: the A in the D1A designation is kind of unusual. most Kawasaki KZ models only have one letter followed by a number. usually 1 digit.

Following chart it is indeed a 78. And no accelerator pump for sure. KZ650D-002704. I'll keep adjusting carbs and see if I can get it to idle smoothly. There is a light knocking in the engine which makes me think the engine bogging down when I gas it could be a valve adjustment issue. I cleaned carbs and checked float heights. All is within spec now. I'll put in new plugs, run it, and see what they look like after a few minutes. I still think the new exhaust upgrade and the shitty pod filters are to blame though. Thanks for the help guys!

Check the valves then sync the carbs. The engine will make the devil's own noise when they're out of sync.
