Questions about carbs on first fire up
11 Jun 2017 05:59 - 11 Jun 2017 08:40
Here is a couple of videos of the first firing of the bike after an oil change and fresh gas in the carbs:
Video 1 - Very first firing before it warmed up (CLICK HERE)
Video 2 - After it started warming up (CLICK HERE)
It started to idle with half choke after getting warmed up some but it would not go over 4000 rpm. Do I need to rebuild the carbs or just try and clean them out? The bike sat for a number of years not running.

The carbs need to be completely disassembled and carefully cleaned. All the old gaskets and orings need to be replaced. The metal parts, jets, needles and such probably do not need replacing. If you have to replace any of them, be sure to get the highest quality parts available. There are a lot of cheap aftermarket carb kits that are junk.
Carefully inspect the float valves. If there is no pitting or corrosion, a good cleaning should get them back to good form.
The carb holders (intake boots) will likely need replacing, as will the carb to air filter box boots. If they are stiff or cracked, they will leak and give you endless headaches.

I hate to think what all that dry start revving was doing to the engine. At least clean out the float bowls and jets.

Thank You texasKZ I will do that before it I crank it again. Swest I will definitely do as you said also. So far the rubber boots on the carburetor seem to get in fairly good shape and still soft but a tear down will give me a clearer picture.
The gaskets and orings. Would Z1 Enterprise be the best option or would there be a good ebay or amazon option. I want to do it right from the beginning because this will be my daily commuter during riding season.

I was just looking at the carbs on
wiredgeorge Motorcycle Carburetors
and the choke lever on my carbs look like the BS38 from the pre-'82 kz Model but the website says it is should be a BS34 but I do not have the pull out choke , mine has the choke lever that moves up and down. Any thoughts??? I will take pictures when I get home from work if needed.
