I ordered a new petcock and filters from z1 enterprises. The "stick" that the fuel enters the petcock from looks to be really high for my tank. Like anytime I would be a gallon down the fuel would have a hard time getting into the valve. I am thinking I'll need to cut the line a bit. Anyone have some experience with this?

I know this is from a different model (my KZ650-C1), but here's a picture of my stock petcock. You may want to compare it to the one you have. Ed

Why cut the line? This change nothing to your problem. Disassemble and clean up your petcock.
The long brass line with filter is for the "ON" position of the petcock.
If the fuel level goes under this line you have to switch to "RES" position, this is an indicator function like "hey you run out of fuel".

Remove this cap and check the filter is clogged.

If the petcock is made for a taller tank, it will make the bike run out of fuel too early. The standard and LTD 900/1000 have different ones.

It won't actually run out sooner, he will have to go to RES sooner, but can stay there longer.

Still, it would be preferable to have the correct one. He could just cut the tube to the same length as the stock one, and all should be fine.

That's right. That's why I'd like to compare the two.

Thanks for all the replies. I cannot get pics of the two petcocks right now, I am spending the week in Dallas Tx.

My new petcock looks like yours Ed, but the copper tube is taller and as such the filter that fits on top is much taller than the res filter. I doubt the new one with the filter will fit at all without cutting.

I took off my fuel tank and filled with vinegar and B.B.'s while I am gone. I hope to come back to a much cleaner tank.

I do have pics of my sparkplugs. Here they are 1-4.

Before you use vinegar and B.B.'s, you have to degrease the tank with Marine Clean (POR15).
Marine Clean solves old cracked fuel and dirt and let the acid than better penetrate into the rusty parts of the tank.
I prefer phosphoric acid that will leave a thin layer of zinc for rust protection.
A greased surface, like cracked fuel, act like a protection layer against the acid.
