Calling 29mm smoothbore gurus, lean at cruise.

Hey folks, been awhile since I've posted.
I've got a kz1000 with weisco 1075 kit, pods and 4into1 running a baffle without packing.

I had been running a set of 1975 vm28mm non pumper carbs for the past year and the bike ran and rode fine.

A set of 29mm smoothbore carbs popped up on craigslist nearby, I went and snatched them up.
They cleaned up great, fuel levels were set and they were dead nuts synced. Installed them and the bike fired right up.

It idles good with the airscrews set about 1/8 open - lightly seated running #20 pilot jets, I've ordered 22.5 pilots and plan on readjusting the airscrews. My slides have the 1.5 mm cutaway.

With the #20 pilots I'm lean and surging at cruising speeds between around 2700 -3500 rpm. All is well above or below that.

Should I raise the needle or wait to see if larger pilots fattens it up enough?
I've read about using a different needle in the 29's to help cure lean conditions around that rpm range, however i can't seem to find that info at the moment.

What say you?

Are the needles in the center position? To change them means to re-sync the carbs. I'd try 125's.

20 pilots are really rich I would go to 17.5 pilot jets, keep your mains the same and raise the needle up one notch. The needle is what you are on at cruise.

With the 20 pilots my air screws are only 1/8 turns out from being fully seated.
If I went smaller on the pilots I wouldn't have any adjustment left.

I have 17.5 pilots in my box so i can try for free I suppose.

And Swest I'm not sure which clip the needle is in right now, but if I have to resync that's not a problem.

I'll have some time tomorrow to play around and report back.
