Carburetor/fuel tank/air box

So I put my carbs back in and reattached the fuel tank and for some reason gas began pouring out of the hose that comes out of the airbox. Any reason why this happened?

Probably one or more of the carbs are overflowing. Most likely due to very high fuel level, float valve not sealing or both.

Ok, but that is not where the fuel overflows from. From the description, I'd say that the fuel is coming up through the jets and running into the air box. I also suspect that the petcock is not working either.

It only seems to come pouring out of the airbox when the petcock is in the off setting when it is on thee on setting or res nothing comes out of the tank when the tank is off the bike.

As an aside, would also sniff-test the crankcase oil and examine its condition to determine whether gasoline has gotten into the crankcase to contaminate the oil.

When gasoline has risen high enough to flow through the main carb bore into the air box, some of the gasoline may have also flowed forward through the intake port, then down past the pistons into the crankcase.

Good Fortune! :)

This is odd.

When working properly,
OFF = no fuel flow
ON = fuel flows until there is a gallon or so left (each model is different, I don't know about yours.)
RES = allows the last bit of fuel to flow.

I'm thinking bad petcock if it's not turning off when set to the off setting because on and res work fine because the fuel is only drawn when there's a vacuum.

Edit: spoke to the old owner (my foreman) he told me that even tho it says off it is a prime setting and that he always left it set to on... Idk about that though.

I have never seen a vacuum operated petcock with an OFF position. Does the petcock have a fitting for the fuel line AND a vacuum line? If so, it it should be marked ON, RES, PRI, and when the engine is not running or the vacuum line is not connected, fuel should only flow in PRI. With the engine running and the vacuum line connected, fuel should flow in all thee positions, depending on the fuel level in the tank.
If the petcock has only a fuel line fitting, it is manually operated and should be marked ON, RES, OFF, and fuel should not flow in OFF. Fuel should flow in the other two positions, assuming the fuel level in the tank is above the RUN tube on the petcock.
This valve works the same whether the engine is running or not.
Posting some pics might be helpful.
Either way, fixing whatever is allowing fuel to flow into the air box is the first order of business. If the carbs were were working perfectly all the time, a petcock would not even be needed, but since gravity will overcome even the tiniest difficulty in the needle and seat valves, a petcock becomes a safety necessity.

I'm thinking that the markings are just incorrect on it because he said it should say pri as well. Case closed I guess. Except now I have to check the crankcase oil. Thank you for all the help.

I would imagine you still have a float issue going on here. As stated if fuel is backing up into the box
