Airbox vs other filters was created by Garrettporter
Ok guys. Ive been reading some threads on carb jetting and filters.
I would really like to delete my stock airbox when i hard tail my 79 400H1.

I plan to rebuild the top end of the engine and complete carb rebuild.

I am wondering what the best alternative filters would be and what jetting size i would likely have to run.
I understand everyone hates foam pods, is ig because they cause tuning nightmares?

I appreciate anny help. Thank you

Unfortunately, it's absence of the stock air box that usually causes tuning nightmares with these engines.
Would urge keeping the air box for later installation, because they are becoming increasingly difficult to find.

Good Fortune! :)

Hardtail? I guess you don't plan to ride much or don't care about poor handling? Ed

Go to the link in my signature to find out about tuning the KZ440 .... and you will regret a hardtail.

If not already done, might want to consider moving to a location within limping distance to a good chiropractor (for back treatments) and a good dentist (to replace lost fillings).

Just teasing ya, Garrettporter.

We all know that hard-tails are now and have long been popular with many folks. But with age, the ride gets increasingly unpleasant and destructive to the anatomy. :(

What I don't know is how to achieve a level of satisfactory KZ400 engine performance sans the air box.
What we do know is that many have tried and many have failed.

Trusting you'll keep us informed about the build.

If not already seen, here's a thread among others that could be helpful:

If you plan on keeping the stock Keihin carbs you may have a tough time getting them working well without the stock airbox. The stock carbs are designed to work with an airbox. Some people get them tuned good enough for them though. From what I've read going up a couple sizes on the main jet and a size on the pilot jet will get you in the ballpark. However, a replacement for the pilot jet may be hard to find so a lot of guys will drill them out a bit to a slightly larger size. The best advice I can give is not to use cheap pods, stick with K&N or similar. If you really want to remove the airbox and go with pods I'd suggest using carbs better suited for that setup, Something like Mikuni VM30s or 28s or Keihin PE carbs.
