Good morning fellow KZ riders.
I have a 79 kz1000 LTD B3 (43k miles) with what I belive are mikuni VM26SS carbs.
The bike has a 4-1 exhaust, UNI pods, a 1mm over bore with weisco high compression pistons(10.25-1).
#20 idle jet, 127.5 main jet, stock needle (5cn18?) with the clip on the lowest setting.
Idle mixture screw 1/2 turn out.
New spark plugs and the timing was just set using a multimeter.

So here is my problem, at idle, the bike will either barely stay running and sputter out and die, or it will race up to 3-4k rpm and sit there. I have new rubber carb mounts and have checked for vacuum leaks and can't find any.
At speed the bike runs fairly well, accept when I am trying to cruise around 60mph. I feel the bike lightly surging.

I have been dealing with this for a while now and am totally lost. Please help!

Looks like you have enriched the fuel mix a bit, based on your signature information. My hunch, it likely needs tweaking.
It never ends with these things.
