Hey guys, first post here with a few Q's. I am a new owner of this 1980 kawasaki KZ650 basket case.

I am used to yammys owning a few xj550's but this is my first crack a a kawasaki. I love these bikes and the lines of them and finally found one that suited me. Question about the carbs on this bike. based on research I ordered 17.5 pilots and 110 mains. Basic pods and 4-1 header. This setup would be common among carbs without an accelerator pump, but mine has one. I want to get rid of it because 1 I'm not sure that it works, 2 With the larger jets it shouldn't be needed, 3 less moving parts and things to go wrong. For the life of me cant find any posts on deleting it, or what ports to block, or anything useful really. Just posts that say to delete it. Sorry for the stupid long post hopefully you guys could lend me some wisdom. Thanks!

Those jets should be close, the accelerator pump wont affect that, it only works as the throttle is opened. At constant throttle the main jet and needle still meter fuel just the same.

You can disable the pump, or run it. I have the stock carbs on my 80 650 and left the pump working. I think the 24's run very well on the 650's either way. The factory manual has a fantastic description of the carburators and how the adjust the accel pump etc. Its the first thing you should buy. Get the correct one though, the 1980 is a supplement to the early manual. The later bikes had CV carbs.

If I knew what I was doing all the time life wouldn't be any fun.

The pump really shouldn't be problematic. I installed a K&L accelerator pump kit from Z1Enterprises.com quite a few years ago. I haven't bench tested the carbs recently, but I did check the pump last year & it still worked properly. The manual warns against removing the pump rod nut as the rod can get damaged, so for future reference as a just in case, before removing the nut, take a good photo & measure its position on the rod.

The following link has the 81 manual in the Files section. jarlef z650 . ...
The 81 has VM24 carburetors w accel pump, so the carb & pump info may be useful. otherwise though, the 81-on 650s are quite a bit different from the earlier models, so that pdf won't be that much use for a 1980 650.

Thanks for the input guys, but I am actually going to go with vm26 carbs off of a 1000 w/o accelerator pump but with the same jet sizes I listed before. Part of this decision is that I can not locate the proper air mixture screws or gaskets for this particular carb set. All the ones I can find are for years 77-79 and the air mix screws look totally different. Also the bowl gaskets don't have the correct pattern with the openings for the acc pump. Anyone know why?
