Hard Turning Fuel Petcock ? was created by kzdcw
Continuing working on my Now Running 77' KZ1000A and am experiencing turning the fuel petcock lever is hard to do so. One of the members on this forum was kind enough to send a stock replacement one, but the lever is hard to turn especially if your on the bike and try to move the lever up to reserve.

Fuel petcock doesn't leak and works as it should. Pulled the lever assembly apart and appeared to be clean. Even used a little silicon spray to help lubricate but didn't help much?

Any ideas

Manual or vacuum-operated petcock?

Good Fortune! :)

Same problem here. Reserve doesn't get used much so crud collects. I used #600 paper to clean it. Had to do it three times in the last three years.

Patton, Manual Petcock

Steve, Skimmed over the articles on petcock rebuild. Looks like anything that is Flat, use a very fine sandpaper to make those surfaces smooth. My petcock doesn't leak though I'm getting a little fuel out the overflow tubes when the bike is parked and on the center stand ? I did recheck and readjusted the float levels with the clear tube method, so who knows

The manual petcock is pretty poor. I would take the lever off and grease the heck out of it every once in a while then the lever would turn easy for a while. Get it to move freely before using it much. Even being careful I've broken off about 5 levers from them being hard to turn. I finally went to a vacuum petcock. I know everyone hates the vaccuum one too, but it is 10x better than that manual one. If you can get a vacuum one to physically fit, just run the vacuum line to any intake sync nipple as the source of vacuum. Works fine.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

Myself as well ? I'm certainly open to the idea of a vacuum operated fuel petcock.

I'll wait till my gasoline gets low in my gas tank, then pull off petcock and see if I can message it to enable the lever to move more freely.

Thanks for the responses on my Post .

Received my Fuel Petcock rebuild kit for my 77' KZ1000A ( Manual Operated Petcock ). Took it apart and used a brass wire attachment for my dremel to clean and polish the inside where the fuel lever goes into. Also polished the fuel lever. Noticed a lot of old hardened fuel deposits inside the petcock.

I also removed the internal plastic valve and smoothed the surface of it with a buffing attachment.

Reinstalled the valve using a little silicon grease to coat it and replace the rubber o-ring of the fuel lever.

Now the fuel lever moves very freely and is smooth. Replaced all the other rubber gaskets that came with the rebuild kit.

Installed the fuel petcock on the tank and checked for leaks. Tank has been sitting on the work bench for a day in the off position and No fuel leaks.

Placed tank on bike , re-installed fuel lines, started the bike and ran fine. Ready for Ride :) :) :)
