78 kz400 c1 help!!! was created by Drafter89
This all happened after I replaced my negative wire that goes to my frame so this might be an electrical topic...idk, but something is telling me its a fuel delivery issue. Fired my bike up and it sat at idol just fine and seemed to be ok. I shut it off after it warmed up. Tried to fire it back up again and it took me about 20 minutes of kicking to get it started again and it kept back firing really loud!! It seriously sounded like a shotgun going off. Now it won't start at all and just keeps backfiring. I have spark, idk what it could be. It ran just fine before I don't get it??? Oh, I have an aftermarket exhaust on it without the baffle in and the carb has been rejetted. And it also got really hot here lately where im from idk if that gas something to do with it? Its ran fine for months. Please help??

I sound like a broken record but have you checked the valves? Also the spark advance, points?

I thought about that but with my experience i wasn't sure if that could be apart of the problem. No I have not. I'm going out there to check right now.

If this were a 4 cylinder engine I'd say you have two plug wires crossed. but since this is a 2 cyl ?

Try removing both plugs and kicking it over a few times, with the throttle wide open and fuel shut off, just in case you have it really flooded.

Don't fix it until it's broken.

Is the new ground wire the same as the old & did you install it exactly the same?
And is it grounded to the frame or to the engine?

If it ran fine before replacing the neg cable then it's something you did, or disturbed. Is the battery fully charged? My Z1 runs like crap with a bad battery.
