If you are fiddling with old points or points intended for a different model you are wasting your time. Replacing points and condensers is a normal maintenance task that needs to be done periodically. Ed

I decided to order a pair of points but try and get it set good enough until they arrive.

Well, the valve clearance and timing sure fixed my hard start and makes it idle and cruise a lot smoother. Also have much more power up to 3/4 throttle like it used to be. Full throttle is still starving for fuel.

Going to order a set of points and see if I can find a bigger primary main jet local unless someone has a better idea or other thing to check first.

If a bigger jet is in order how much bigger should I go? I was thinking two sizes. I'm at 65 now.

If not already done, could test ride with the fuel tank cap ajar (not fully closed) to determine whether or not insufficient fuel tank venting might be resulting in fuel starvation at full throttle.

Fuel starvation can also result from conditions such as crud suspended in the gasoline inside the fuel tank which collects around the petcock intake screens, or crud inside the petcock, or a clogged in-line fuel filter, kinked fuel line, rusty fuel tank interior, etc.

Good Fortune! :)

I tried the cap trick last year. Didn't solve it. Also rebuilt petcock last year and checked the flow last night before putting it on.

Is it known whether or not the existing jetting ever produced satisfactory engine performance at wide open throttle?

Has the suspected fuel starvation been verified by plug readings following a WOT throttle chop (i.e., throttle chop testing)?

Has application of choke been tried at WOT to determine whether the enrichened fuel mixture affects the suspected fuel starvation at WOT?

Good Fortune! :)

im 95% sure that this all started after i rebuilt the head. before that when i fixed the diaphragms full throttle was good.
other two things were covered on the first page. plug chop was posted looking lean and choke half way on solves stumbling issue .

well a year later and almost two years of riding my bike with this condition and i solved the issue.

today at work before i left i decided to close the gaping hole on my air box that someone made to fit the wrong battery when i first bought the bike. battery was too tall so it poked into the air box a little. ive since replaced the battery long ago. so i closed it up with some cardboard and electrical tape for now just to test it. rode it home and the full throttle issue is gone. for the first time in two years i enjoyed riding my bike and didnt think about selling it the whole time i was riding.

one thing that makes no sense to me is why the engine ran so good before i rebuilt the top end. before i did that the air box was cut and a piece of foam glued in place for a filter and i still think the bike was actually faster than it is now. maybe higher compression from all the carbon?

either way issue is solved and im happy. just figured id come by and let everyone know. never ended up replacing the points and condenser. maybe i'll add that to the list of parts for the winter months.
