I went for a 140 mile ride last week and everything was working fine. Two days later I went out for a short trip with my daughter and my bike seemed like it wasn't getting enough fuel. When I came to a stop sign it would not idle, it just would stall.

I checked my fuel lines and vacuum hoses and everything seemed fine. I started it up cold with full choke and it seemed normal. After riding for the bit the engine seemed a bit revvy (as always) so I turned off the choke like I always do. That's when the trouble seems to start. I have to give it an extra amount of throttle to keep it from stalling when I stop.

I rode it for a about a mile to warm up the engine. When I got back I let it run in the garage and it wouldn't stay idling it just stalled. If I pulled the choke out it would start though. It seems like there is more of a smell of gas when I would run it. As long as I stayed on the throttle a bit more than I usually do it would run fine but when I let up it would eventually stall.

In my unskilled opinion it *seems* to be running a bit rich on gasoline. It's frustrating because it seemed to be running just fine last week when I went on my long ride. Does anyone have any ideas for me?

Thanks in advance.

Check your spark plugs. If you are too rich they will be fouled black.

Nothing lasts, nothing is finished, and nothing is perfect.

If it idles when the choke is on but dies when you turn it off, then it sounds like it's not getting enough gas through the pilot circuit. Has it been sitting a while? Could be a clogged pilot jet.

"Check your spark plugs. If you are too rich they will be fouled black."

It hasn't been sitting. I just had the carbs cleaned and partially rebuilt. I also put in an inline fuel filter. I hope that's not what it is...

It does sound like fouled plugs. Do you happen to start it in your garage just to "warm it up" and not ride it? That will eventually foul out your plugs.

I do that sometimes but I just put in new plugs about 500 miles ago.

I will have to check on that. Could a problem with the valves come on that quickly?

Easy enough to pull plugs and take a gander at em. Out of curiosity, was there old gas in the tank still, after the carbs got cleaned? How long did it run good after carbs were cleaned, or did problem start right after? If it's something they did, then obviously I vote that they should correct it. :)

Was also thinking possibility of insufficient valve clearances.

Failure to idle when warm is a classic symptom of insufficient valve clearance.

Whatever "cold" clearance exists is quickly reduced as the engine warms.

Good Fortune! :)

I filled it up myself after the work was done and then I put about 500 miles on it . I also have an inline fuel filter on it.
