Is it possible to buy petcock spring?
25 Mar 2016 17:23 - 25 Mar 2016 17:29
Circle spring broke and I installed some wire. I guess it was pushing lever plate to rubber gasket too hard, it is leaking when engine runs. I ordered new round gasket with 5 holes, but if I don't solve spring problem, it will start leaking again.
Any ideas where to get the spring or use some kind of substitute?
Lots of smart people here!
Thanks.

Your local hardware store has springs.

I've never seen a spring like that at a hardware store around here. [strike]I'd be surprised if that isn't still used on some current model and available from a dealership.[/strike]
No part number listed in the pic, so I bet it is unavailable.

I think NAPA still have their hardware bins too. None of the chains do anymore. You'd be surprised at what I find at my local True Value or ACE.

What is the inner/outer diameter and thickness? Maybe one of us has a old, unused petcock lounging around to take apart and sell you that spring.

That wave washer is kinda thin & fine. I'd be surprised if a big box hardware store had one in the correct size.
The one one my bike is about 20.8 mm ID & 23.6 mm OD, give or take 0.1 mm.

A slightly "thicker" wave washer may work okay if having an acceptable i.d. and o.d.
Which might necessitate slightly longer screws.
Be sure o.d. doesn't block path of the screws.
Perhaps a well lubed o'ring in lieu of a wave washer, which might also necessitate slightly longer screws.
Just take the turn piece (not marked) to the hardware supplier to look for i.d. over the turn piece with an o.d. that won't interfere with the screws.
Where thicker wave washer or o'ring is fitted, lightly torque the screws to a "just barely snug" setting.
Some Loctite would be okay.
And in any event, keep Godzilla away from the screws.

I am certainly not against using substitute parts but in this case you may just be as well off buying a cheap used petcock on Ebay to use as a donor. Now It is definitely more money to go this route than if you could just get the part itself, but you will know its the right thing and not have to deal with the headache of trying to chase down a potential leak.
The light that burns twice as bright, burns half as long. And you have burned so very, very brightly Roy.
