Anyone know a Mikuni part # for VM28 carb float?
07 Mar 2016 18:21 - 07 Mar 2016 18:22
I've read a lot of threads where people have been having carb flooding woes and have some times judgmentally wondered how something relatively simple can cause so many problems. Well despite years of working on all sorts of carbs I have met my match on my KZ1000A2 with 28mm carbs. Based on my experience with a Yamaha XT200 that nearly drove me to madness with just one carb, I've decided it's the same issue with the floats being porous or something of the sort so you can't get them to work consistently. When I finally broke down a got a new carb float for the Yamaha my troubles were gone. That carb must have been on and off 25 times before then.
I have set my carbs up on my KZ1000 using the clear tube test etc. etc. even raised my auxiliary fuel tank up much higher to provide more head of fuel, to see if they'll flood, but everything works fine. Put the carbs back on the bike, it's OK for a while, next thing fuel is peeing out of the overflows and it's a disaster. Have repeated the process ad nauseam, but just when I think I've finally nailed it, it does it again. The needles and seats all look fine and as I say everything works fine in theory and in practice, until it lets me down again.
So I'm looking for new floats, do any of the brass ones they have for the racing carbs and modern VM carbs fit, anything that might not get wrecked if I have to use ethanol fuel would be advantageous. Also I'm looking the needle and jet assemblies, so advice on the best ones and where to buy them would be welcomed too. I intend the next time I take the carbs off to be the last, at least for a while.

You can get them here.
jetsrus.com/
The brass floats can fit but develop leaks.
I have used VM 28 floats in my 33's. Just don't have the cash for new ones.

I'm 98% sure the floats used in VM22, VM24, VM26, and VM28 were all the same. They are those black plastic looking things in all of them, and don't really cause problems. The needles and seats a different story, thay are the big leak problems usually.
321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

Thanks guys. I was thinking about the brass floats because I've seen them for 1/2 the price of the normal ones. Would a VM29 float fit a VM28?
The needles and seats are pretty pricey, but if they would solve the problem they'd be worth it. What type is best, the viton tip or plain metal? I've heard people say the genuine Mikuni ones are much better than aftermarket ones, any comments?

Nick, you should give Sudco a call about your concerns, they are very helpful & knowledgeable about carbs, It'll only cost you a phone call

That sounds more reasonable on the seats. perhaps I will recant from my "this is the last time and give it two more tries, once with the seats and then if Heaven forbid that's not OK go for floats. I never had such problems back in the day with carbs, so the fault has to lie with aged parts IMO, mainly on the bike, thankfully none of my aged parts are reduced to dribbling all over the garage floor yet
