Carb Rebuild. Initial Settings? '82 kz550a was created by wrenchmonkey
Hey Gents,

The patient:
'82 kz550a
11k odo
all stock setup

I've done searches for the past hour but haven't found what I'm looking for.
Probably not knowing the correct phrasing to actually find it since there's so much info on this site.
After the carbs are cleaned and assembled:

What initial settings for air mix etc do you use?

My worthless manual say "note what it was and put it back that way..." (paraphrased but essentially that's it).

I recall from years of working on air cooled VWs that the carbs had a "start with these settings" kinda' default and tune it from there according to your own engine..
Is there anything like that for these carbs? A kinda' default setup?

Any insight is greatly appreciated

The factory service manual for your bike, in the 1981 supplement, suggests setting the pilot screws at 1-3/8 turns open, and the fuel height at 3.5mm from the gasket surface. Other than carb sync those are about the only adjustments possible on the carbs, other than maybe cable free play and idle speed.

EDIT: sorry, just realized you are looking for the 1982 info. Kawasaki doesn't list the pilot screw setting but since they are CV carbs for '82, I'd start with 2.5 turns from lightly seated and then tune from there.

Totally stock, it is 1-3/8 out +/- 1/4.
The 1982 KZ550A3 is the same as the 1980 KZ550A1 (In 1983, the KZ550A4 went to CV carbs.)

It's hard to locate in the FSM because not all models came out at the same time. It's in the 1980 supplement (of the 79 to 82 manual). The base model for that family is the 79 KZ500. The 550 came out in 1980. The KZ550A carbs did not change until 1983, so the 1980 supplement covers the 1982 KZ550A3.

Here's a page with TK22 carb info.
