1979 sr650 carburetor kit was created by Whitels
Hello all, I'm picking up a 1979 sr650 next week and the guy told me the carbs are frosen up, so my question is does the sr650 utilize the same carb kit as the kz650? I have read that the bore is different between the two but I'm not sure that would affect the kit, also any recommendations on jetting? It's stock airbox and stock 4 into 1 exhaust.

Forget the kit; the metal parts in the carbs are better than what you will find in the kit. Just clean the carbs. Do not mix parts between carbs. Ed

Ok, I'm assuming I will have to disassemble the carbs to do so, will the gasket sets for the kz carbs work fine?

If your gaskets are still good (not torn) you can reuse them by smearing a fine coating of grease on them. Mine are 20 years old.

Agree on keeping the stock brass parts. Get new O-rings though since they are sure to be hard and brittle. Cycle O-rings sells a VM carb O-ring kit that should help.

Ok, thanks guys. This is my first attempt at repairing a 4 carb setup, my only other experience is with a royal enfield bullet carburetor.

Best thing to do is ungang the carbs and break them down for a good carb dip soaking. There is no need to take apart the slide assemblies so I'd dip them assembled (there are no O-rings). When removing the pilot fuel screws be careful to NOT screw them in, just screw them out. Those screws have long and pointed tips which like to bust off in the carb body, and often times people screw them in only to jam the tips into the carb body. Be sure to apply a little care here. Overall though, those carbs are very simple and easy to work on.
