Another 1000st airbox question

24 Jan 2016 13:25
#707913
As i search the forum for airbox info im finding little on these.
Mine has the lower silencer part but the elbow snorkle or whatever you call it is gone.
I think i read some where to remove the lower part and even the screens to improve performance.
I know i know ..if it aint broke dont fix it ..
But i have to know lol. will it get more air ..will it sound different
i have no problem re jetting if is does get more air.

So what do you plan to do about filtering the air? Sucking in air that has fine road grit, etc. in it is going to kill, not improve, performance because it will quickly grind up the cylinder walls / piston rings which in turn will ruin your compression. Ed

Ed you know not of what you speak. The Kz1000st has the air filter in the first section behind carbs.
Removing the curved snorkel will have little effect on performance or jetting. I ran just the first section with
a replacement K&N filter until I sold the bike this last fall. Now the hole there is bigger and does require
some carb tuning.

I have never used the silencer on my air box. Too restrictive and stupid.

This is probably true; it wouldn't be the first time. However, he stated "I think i read some where to remove the lower part and even the screens to improve performance" If he does that what would filter the air? Ed

Ed the screens dont filter the air ..the air filter does ..right..
but that said i am not to keen on removing them. and im not too sure i want to fool with it at all just wondering what some of you guys have done in the past.and im still not sure what the lower part does and does it restrict air?

Ed i see your point..we just talking baout two different things,,the diagram doesnt really show it but parts 5&6 have a mesh on them that im thinking the articular I read was talking about removing. since i have looked in a few airboxes and saw large bugs and other things i can see why these need to stay in place.

To my knowledge there hasn't been an actual dtno/driving test or REAL (not sponsored by a speed shop or parts place) checking the difference between having a snorkel and not, it was designed that way for a reason, the screens barely obstruct anything and the snorkel helps drivability.

The elbow? I have one of them in the parts shed, buried behind the H2 motor I'll be moving in a few hours
