VM33 Smoothbore Fuel Level was created by pinkiedog64
Hello all,

I recently bought an '80 KZ1000E. Two owners ago built the motor with a Wiseco 1261 cylinder kit, Andrews cams, 10.5:1, welded crank, yada yada. Has VM33 smoothbores. Guy I got it from hadn't ridden it much and when I got it from him I took the carbs off, cleaned them, put on new gaskets and o rings. Just mechanically synced them last night. Now I need to set the fuel level. So, wondering what the correct fuel level (not float level) is for the VM33s. Plan on using the clear tube method.

Here's a pic of the bike. Had velocity stacks on but going to pods.

Thanks all,
Stephan

Nice bike and welcome. I have 33's. They can be hard to tune. The float level is the same as the other VM series. I have one VM 28 float in mine. The other one would fill up with gas and no amount of soldering would fix it. Jets are easy to come by too. jetsRus has them. I have the bottom of a mini mag light I made a fitting out of 20 years ago. Set the level 4mm below the gasket. Pics?

The Sudco manual shows 23mm float height for both Mikuni VM29 and VM33 smoothbore carbs, which suggests that fuel level would also be the same.

Good Fortune! :)

I'll be resetting mine when I get home. Also some jetting. I'll start a thread on the 33's.

Thanks for the replies. Here are a couple of pics of the VM33s. Going to start tonight for the first time since the clean/reseal.

What are the slide cutaway numbers. For the KZ/Z1, it's supposed to be 1.5, mine are 2.0. That means I have 65 pilots instead of 20.5's.

My throttle slides are 1.5. Here's a pic of the notes I took as I disassembled the carbs showing all the jets sizes as I removed them. With clean plugs, the bike ran like a scalded ape with no stumbles or flat spots. However, the plugs would get fuel wet/show way rich after just 5-10 mins of riding. The guy I bought it from admitted to richening up the air screws to make it run rich because he was scared of running it lean. So, I am hoping to get lucky and dial in the air screws and to not have to change other jetting. Will see.

The original engine build sheet is below.

some that own 33s dont know that there is a vacuum on number 3 carb that should be plugged. Whould cause it to be lean tho and not rich like your problem.

The 33's are known to run rich. That's why I said they're hard to tune. Obsolete parts makes it that much tougher. I have a set of jet drills. 60 is too lean/65 is too rich.
