Being designed as a road race carb ment to be used from half to full throttle
Mikuni didn't put a lot effort into the idle side.
On a small cc motor they see a very weak idle signal therefore need real big pilot jets to pull fuel.
I get by using them only because I don't street ride my KZ650 just drag race it and only use the top half of the throttle

Funny you say that zukdave. The bike is flawless from about 3k-7k rpm but then idles like shit...and I only get about 20-25mpg.
I'm thinking about selling them to get something more suitable for city driving and to increase gas mileage/reliability. It looks as if I could get away with $700 or close to it since they are in great condition

Wonder if the second owner knew what he had? Anyway, nice find. Good thing you asked around.

The 750E1 came with CV34 Keihin carbs. I've got a spare set fully rebuilt in MINT condition if you want to go back to stock and don't want to mess around.

A good set of VM 29's will fetch good money, but not $1200 good. Figure on about half that if they are clean.

How much would you let them go for?

I don't want to discuss money on the open forum. Send me a PM with offer if interested. I also have a brand new Dynojet stage 1 & 3 kit if you want to fine tune for that header.

Honestly, I don't really understand the hype, back in the 70's when they came out the 29s were a great carb. Today, there are very few bikes that come with mechanical carburetors, CV carbs dominate the market, even on crotch rockets etc. well, that is, before EFI.

$600 seems to be real world top dollar for smoothbores. Someone once in a while may get more, but it's not typical

I do not understand why people think they will not work on o 650 ? Way back in the 80's I did a KZ650 for a customer 720 wiesco kit street cams lightly ported head and a set of 29 Mikuni smoothbores and it ran and idled flawless like 900 rpm and I do not remember doing much to them :S

They can work work on a small motor if you spend the time to tune them.
I think for the avg. home mechanic they can be a pain,
With mine I think my issue is they need larger idle air bleed jets but since I want a more
modern carb. like a flat slide or the CR special so I'm done with them.

You may have answered your own question. As you described it, the engine you put them on was not stock. If it had been a stock KZ650 engine you may have had different results. Ed

That's my feeling on the smoothbores, outdated old tech that is way overpriced, a set of newer sportbike carbs are an upgrade, newer mikuni designs or CR carbs are also. Yet for the money you could piece together an EFI setup and have instant reliable tuning
