Air box and boot question

#694400
Hey all, been awhile since I posted on here. Getting back on track with some Moto projects and have a question/fav or to ask. Can anyone give me a measurement from their kz1000 air box, I need to know the size of the holes the air box rubbers go into on a stock air box.

I have a 78 kz1000 a2, the air box is long gone and the bike has shitty emgo pods. Fired it up last night and will be getting it back on the road over the winter. I need to sort out an air box.

Cheers
Chris

Can you measure the holes that the air box rubbers go into and let me know the size of the hole, would be a big help.

I Don't have a stock air box and need to compare the holes on my breadbox to the stock box holes.

Hard to measure exactly but my guess is the diameter is about 49mm where they pass through the box. My guess is the rubbers are used back to front with the Abe box

Thanks guys, I'm looking for the stock air box hole measurement in particular. I just want to double check that diameter before ordering a set of new oem rubbers.

I got close with a trying a set off my cb650 project bike, the air box rubbers fit in the breadbox but were a touch too big for the intake of the carbs. I'm giving myself three months to get the kz road worthy, the insurance on my cb750 is up in three months lol.

I'm hoping the stock ones fit, I have one for my cb750 I set up awhile back and the stock Honda air boots fit nicely. When set up properly the breadbox worked well for me.

PFD I can answer your question, having had an amazing Barn find today. I buy and sell land and property and was looking at this house and barn in the middle of nowhere that has been empty for over 10 years with 35 acres of land. The house had been completely vandalized and so had the living area that was part of this big barn, probably 4000 sq ft. The barn was completely empty other than for dirt, a bit of straw and a couple of empty hydraulic fluid buckets. The wind was howling in through the missing doors and windows, everything of any value appeared to have long since gone, but suddenly I looked down at my feet and sitting on the grounds was a KZ1000 airbox. it was coated in bird crap and dirt and must have been there for 10 years plus, but it had the lid the filter the gauze filters etc, not a mark on it or a crack or broken clip in sight - no snorkel. I just could not believe the coincidence that I should find it, as my business partner who was with me said "you are the only person who would even know what it is". It's only because I'd spent so long looking at them on Ebay etc, that I knew immediately what it was!!! :) So in short the answer to your question is 48mm. I don't think I will be putting it on my bike any time soon. I really like my Z1 airbox, much easier to work with, but I'm excited to clean it up and have it on the shelf so I have the option to return to stock should that ever be an issue, i like the idea of having the original parts available even if I prefer some customization. I still cannot get over the coincidence of it being there, what are the chances?

Glad you asked this question PDF. I was just looking at my old bread box and thinking it would be nice know what boots would work. FYI, these are nearly impossible to find these days. I have to agree that the bread box works way better than pods. It works best if you block off the ends. I used foil tape on the inside of the bread box.

Thanks for the reply redhawk4, I will have to compare with my breadbox. I was in contact with a couple guys on eBay selling stock boxes and they came back with similar measurements 47-48mm. Iirc that's the same as I measured on my beradbox, I can get oem boots from my local kawi dealer at a decent price.

@kaw-a-holic should work well once set up right with foam and proper taping, I've had one on my cb750 with good results. In fact I mean to re install it now that some unrelated trouble shooting is done. I took it off and went back to the stock box to eliminate it out of the equation.

Thanks again guys!

I'm still certain my Breadbox uses the stock airbox rubbers reversed, so the fiter box sits in the slot where the stock airbox would go, but with the short end that goes in the stock box on the outside slipping over the carb with the long end in side. Well at least that's how mine appears to be, in which case the holes in the breadbox should be 48mm to match the stock airbox.
