Vacuum leaks

The carb holders on my 82 kz750 4 have vacuum leaks. I sprayed brake clean around them and the idle speed shot up at each one. The clamps around the carbs are tight, and the rubber is still soft which leads me to believe the leak is where the holders attach to the head. Is there an o-ring seal in there or does it just seal by pressing on the head? Would a silicone sealant work or should I just replace them?

No doubt about it; you should replace the carb holders. Trying to seal them will only be a temporary fix at best. Ed

Are all the screws tight where the carb holders attach to the head ? maybe the P O didn't use a non permanent locking agent on the threads like you're supposed to, & they're loose

I used :ohmy: Permatex on my 20 year old holders. It worked but I just ordered new ones. That is the only place I will use that SHT.
Cheap fix until I could afford new ones.

I'll add them to my "parts to purchase" list. I took them off and they are cracked where they are supposed to seal to the head. I cleaned them up and used silicone sealant to seal it up for now. Engine runs so much better now.

Yea, for about 60.00 bucks or so, It's a fairly cheap & easy fix, & one less thing you'll have to worry about for many yrs.

I'll be pulling the engine over the winter time for a re-seal of everything, so they'll definitely get replaced. On the plus side, sealing the cracked ones allowed me to ride the bike for the first time! Carbs seem to be working ok now, but I'll probably go through them too.
