rebuilding 29's
20 Sep 2015 20:22
My first attempt at rebuilding carbs.
So far everything went pretty good. I checked the float level when I got em back together by setting up an old head and using a protractor and measuring the motor on the bike then blocking the head up with the measurement on the table.
Next get em back on the bike and sync them in.

Nice resto!! Everyone's wet dream here! On the site!
29 smoothbores!
Did you do the gold cadmium yourself? Like with an Eastwood kit? Or send them to a plater? Or where they that nice?
Did you sync your slide levels first? I always put a piece of 1mm copper wire under the slide opening. Do a pull thru, and get all 4 open equal.
It helps with the fine tuning. And was that vapor blasting on the aluminum? I always used sulphuric acid H2SO4 diluted to dip my aluminum.
But Nice! I want a set that nice! Here is the last set I did.
I see your float tool! From Dave? "gunsmith blue" Dave makes nice parts cheap! I bought his other one for the small side drain pugs.

Those carbs look awesome! Nice work.
I've restored a few of sets myself and have extra O-rings if anyone is in need. I bought in bulk from McMaster Carr and have spares.

I didn't take the slides apart was hoping they'd be close. Would just taking the slides off the shaft change anything?
Yes and I emailed him to see if he had the plugs without the hose nipple. I like the look of the brass plug and the threads seem better then the stock one's.
I used a sonic cleaner I'm still learning with it but so far I'm happy with it.
I've seen those vapor blasters they do a great job.

Very nice Eddie, I'm jealous
I have a set of 26's that I will be doing this winter, I'd be happy if they looked half as good as those.
Are they going on your 78?

Those are pretty ...... when I retired mine after the manifolds gave up I blew em out and cleaned em up wrapped them in plastic and put em in my living room cabinet ......... still in very good shape but will give em another going over this spring when I get em back out..... have been thinking about a sonic cleaner, might just break down....... told the wife and kids they will make a nice payday someday but not till I'm dead and gone.
........... Got em back in 83 and I can still picture spending most of the night syncing and installing them and then getting up at 4 in the morn for a quick ride before work. :woohoo:
