83 750 Spectre Carb Cleaning was created by flextx500
Newbie here, I just picked up an 83 750 Spectre that hasn't been on the road since 2008. I've already rebuilt the started because it was shot. I've had the carbs off and cleaned them out. Being new to these carbs, I didn't realize that there were 2 main jets. I totally missed the pilot jet. There is a plastic cap covering it . Is this cap held in with an o-ring and all I have to do is pull on it? Or is it a press fit. Just curious before I tear into it again. These carbs also have the air screws hidden under a plug that can be removed. Does this plug have to be replaced once everything is cleaned/replaced?

Thanks in advance.

You need to pull the plugs so you can shoot carb spray through all the passages. Take the screws out noting how many turns they were in. DO NOT HIT RUBBER WITH THE SPRAY.

The carb parts diagram at partzilla shows an o-ring.
If the o-rings are shot, Z1Enterprises.com may have them.
A metric o-ring kit may have a suitable size (nitrile or viton rubber)(harbor freight, eebbaayy or etc).

Polyester caps w/ o-rings -- 11012-1128 . for reference.

Do the plugs for the air screws need to be put back in? I realize they were there for emission purposes, so you wouldn't mess with them.

I pulled the pilot jets out, all of them were plugged. Got them cleaned out now.

I then removed the air screw plugs, and removed the air screws. 3 of them were at 2 1/2 turns out, the 4th one was all the way in!!!

I'll put it back together tomorrow night and hopefully it'll be running much better.

I got it back together and it purrs like a kitten. Now on to the next issue. It runs great on the stand. It fires right up and it revs nice also. However, when I go to take it for a ride it wont rev. I can't get much over 30-40mph out of it. It just wont rev up. Any suggestions.

I got it! I double checked the ignition advancer and everything was good there. I forgot to put the air filter and air box cap back on. That's all it took. It running great now. Although I only got about 1/4 mile down the road and there was a deer standing there watching me. That was karma telling me to put on a helmet!

They are big stupid RATS. I found out they don't look up. I had some just below me at the ranch. If I had my 44, I'd have dinner that day.
