Tear in carb diaphram!? Bike dying

01 Aug 2015 16:03

Bike keeps dying when I let of the throttle. Had the carbs off and found a couple open slits on the diaphrams. I posted a pic of one of them. The other diaphram has a couple of teeny tiny rips in it. Will this cause the bike to die like that ? Everything else is in check. Anything I can put on there to seal the openings or do I need to buy new ones?

Your throttle response will be a lot out with split diapragms, also you risk holing a piston(s) due to weak mixture.

I just paid £35 for one diapragm, i did a temporary repair with super glue but it won't last.

This guy is really good, he knows motorcycle carbs back to front. Also a mine of advice on tuning and settings

Get new ones. I know they aren't cheap but look how long those lasted. Never run right without them. ALL of them.

Hold them up to light, splits start as tiny pinhole almost invisible. I almost missed the split on mine.

I'd advise checking these very carefully given the age of these bikes. Not being a drama queen here, but a split diapragm and a long fast run could be a piston wrecker.

Tjats what i did lol. One of the slits is about 1/8 of an inch long lol. And there's a couple of other little holes I can see right through. I'll be replacing as soon as possible. But would these tears cause the bike to die when I let of the throttle like it has been?

Your idle mixture is leaned out -actually everything from shut off to wide open throttle. What was set up right with intact diapragms is now all wrong with the splits.

Two reasons: the manifold vacuum won't lift the slide and needle like it should, also you are bleeding air in...almost like adding another pilot circuit. This is where a muppet would try to tune it out rather than getting to the root problem.

It is an easy fix, but they are quite expensive. :(

check out jbmindustries.com/

I have never used them but have heard good things and bookmarked their page for when I might need a set for my bike.

Prices look quite reasonable
