Throwing this out here for comments or suggestions.
1978 KZ100 LTD 1015 cc, pod filters V&H sidewinder, Dyna 3 ign. WG coil upgrade, ported head, VM26 carbs, valve clearance set, timing right on the money, and carbs are sync'd. Here is the jetting - pilot 120, mains 145, needles clipped 3rd grove, fuel screws 1 3/4 turns out.
Had 135 mains but felt like I was leaving something on the table on the top end so I went to 140 and then to the 145 this weekend and this thing is a monster now! Runs smooth in town and is crazy fast on the country roads. Did the plug chop and a longer ride and the plugs are a dull white. Pipes are not blue or over heating. The jets seem large but the plugs and the power say things are close. There is no surge or stall on a hard throttle pull and not one pop from the header. Any comments?

My comments might make you mad,
VM carbs are already a little rich from the get go.
Not sure you have the correct slides, but your carbs came stock with even smaller, leaner jets then the standard 107.5s in a KZ1000.
So:
1. You are delirious... or,
2. All four of the carbs are still screwed up... or,
3 You have a massive blockage from the fuel selector to the fuel lines and Tees... or,
4. Something is wrong with the fuel selector ... or,
4. There is a blockage at all four needle and seats... or
5. Your float levels are all way too low...
6. Or you don't really have 135 or 145 Mikuni jets.

Seriously though and kidding aside, I don't know how much air the ported heads could flow. I can't think of many reasons that this engine would make any more power past 130-135 mains even with open aftermarket 2x 2:1 pipes, they are not full on race scavenging headers.
So, I'm betting it's #1! LOL  ....

I was holding off. 12.0 pilot, no 17.5. 117.5 mains. I had a bank of KZ 900 carbs. I cannibalized them for parts for my 28's. 1.5 slide cutaway was stock on both. The 72/73 Z1 had 2.0. I cut 2mm off the slide bottoms to make them 2.0 if I remember correctly. I went to a 125 main jet but it was drowning the bike. I changed the float valves to 2.5 and cured the running out of fuel problem at WOT. I still have my 28's. I put back in the 1.5 slides and have 17.5 pilots and 117.5 mains. It ran fine that way even with pods and a V/H 4/1 exhaust. I bought VM 33's 20 years ago and am still running them now. Still a little rich in the low end with 60 pilots and 125 mains. I'm waiting until I put in my 10.25/1 Wiseco's and I'll start over.

Must have been a typo.

I knew this post would be like seeing bigfoot or a UFO, do you say something. No offense taken, what is going on just don't make sense. Here is a little more info. Before the head porting, The mains were 122.5 and the pilots were the 20. Bike ran great plugs were tan color. The head was ported both intake and exhaust gasket matched, a lot of material removed. The same carbs were put back on and I almost burned up the motor. All 4 pipes blued 10 inches in less than a mile. That is when the carbs were removed completely disassembled, cleaned, new jets (135 main) needle and seats, new cross over tees and all new fuel line. Also replaced the fuel petcock with new one. All fuel levels were set to height. Bike ran great plugs still white. Here is another bit of info. Before putting in the 145 jets, I re clipped the needles in the 4th position and put 127.5 jets and it killed the bike. turned the plugs black in less than 3 minutes. Re clipped needles back in 3rd position and went to the 145 engine came to life and plugs are a flat white. I checked the jets with a .055 drill bit and they are 145. I know it sounds crazy but was just throwing it out there to see if anyone else has seen this.

What elevation are you at? At 2400 feet I ran 132 mains on a 79ltd 1260 kit 28 pumpers ,pods and kerker kr with street baffle. Ran fairly well as long as it was fed 100/130 av gas.

Just an update..Floats were low, had to level bike and check. Also found that the timing advance was sticking. might have to drop the pilot to 17.5 and the mains around 125 to 127.5. One thing I learned it float height is very critical.
