Hey everyone
My original petcock started spraying gas out of the sides a couple weeks ago. I took it apart and the plastic piece which holds the diaphragm was damaged. I ordered a used one from another bike on ebay and changed the rubber parts from my original petcock over. It doesn't spray gas anymore but this one leaks from around the bolts at the top of the tank. I'd rather buy a brand new petcock than take the risk on another used one. Can anyone recommend a new petcock that would fit? Also what should I do with the vacuum ports on the tank and carbs where the vacuum line goes?

That leak may be the result of reusing old rubber parts. A proper rebuild kit with new, high quality o-rings and diaphragms will probably fix the problem.
Pingle makes some of the best and most expensive manual petcocks, though I do not know if they make one for the 550.

If you go with a manual valve, you will need to cap off the port on the carb with the same kind that are on the others. There will no longer be a vacuum port on the valve to plug.

I ordered a new rebuild kit from Z1 last year so I have a feeling it's probably not the rubber parts that are at fault. I've brought the original petcock to the Kawasaki dealer who told me that the whole petcock needed to be replaced. I'll give the one Swest suggested a try before I remove the vacuum system.

I like the automatic feature of them. The 84 550 I just sold has one and it worked perfectly. B) I have a new manual one on my Z1 and it started leaking. Turns out rust from the tank scored the inside surfaces. I dressed them up with #600 paper (a few times) and it's working again. Always something.

There should be an oval rubber o-ring between the petcock and tank, and there MUST be nylon flat washers on the 2 bolts that hold the petcock to the tank. If yours are metal they will leak; the originals are nylon or a nylon-like material; not metal. Ed
