Mikuni carburetor recommendations wanted
22 May 2015 18:19
Thinking about upgrading the carburetion from the BS34, original to my bike.
The engine was freshened up in February with brand new pistons/rings, a low-mile cylinder block, and a nice stock 84 ZN1100 Bathtub head with a set of 84 GPZ cams.
I'm very happy with how it runs, but if a better suited carburetor set is available (considering the modifications I've made), I'd like to know what the forum members suggest as the best choice to go with.
The bike is stock, except for the above head/cams, a Dyna 2000 ignition, and V&H header, with street baffle.

I have had very good results using Mikuni RS36 carbs on my FJ1200. They are easy to tune and parts are easy to find.

Can I maintain the use of my factory air box with those? Also, I may have to change the throttle system, since what it has is a single pull-cable.

Well...must be everyone is out riding
Once properly adjusted, would I notice a significant performance gain with a set of these, over the BS34? So, the air box won't work, so I'd need to use pod filters instead? Would RS34's be too small?
Are they designed to work ONLY with individual filters, or would air box use be preferable, if a method of attachment was available?

Measure the bell size and the intake size. If you have CV carbs, they should work. On my Z1, I had to get late model carb boots and open up a KZ 900 air box. The Z1 box wouldn't fit unless I spliced with a larger hose and that would've looked stupid. I'm pro air box.

I use individual filters on my FJ, I've never seen any that use any type of airbox. Yes, you will notice a significant difference over the stock CV carbs. You will need to use a push / pull throttle system. Motion Pro makes the system I use. The RS34's will work very well. If you were using the bike at the track and or going bigger with the motor you could use the RS36. My set came front the Carburetor Parts Warehouse.

For street use, would the RS36 would be too big, or difficult to jet/tune for my application? Please elaborate...thanks!

I have 84 GPZ cams on the bathtub head, with 132.5 main jets working well in the CV carbs.

The RS36 will work and might be the better way to go if you see the possibility of eventually building a bigger motor or building a motor with more compression. The bigger carbs may not deliver as good a mpg as the RS34 and you may loose some bottom end response but your engine will keep making power all the way to Redline. My FJ would make power up to 8,500 and then run out of breath with the stock BS36 mikunis. Now it keeps making power untill the Rev limiter at 9,500.
Good luck.
Good luck.

Will my stock vacuum fuel petcock operate properly with Flat Slide Mikuni carburetors? It works very well with the BS34 set, currently on the bike.
