Help Diagnose high idle was created by Richardb98
I've got my kz440 here and it seams to idle SUPER high. Can't tell exactly how but I'm guessing about 5k. (Don't have a tach cable because PO took it off) I've adjusted the idle knob under the carbs and have checked for vacuum leaks and the U.S. Model doesn't have a mixture screw that I can play with. I just broke down the carbs and went threw them and I noticed that the #2 carb has a very very slight rip in the diaphragm, but it's where it sits in the groove so I doubt that could effect it that much? Also worth noting that I have a home made air filter if that could be it? Any ideas, suggestions would be very welcome

Did you bench synchronize the carbs before you put them back on?
If those carbs are like the ones on the larger bikes, the mixture screws are covered by remove able plugs. Those screws need to be removed in order to properly clean the low-speed passageways.
Are the throttle cables in good shape, properly lubricated and adjusted?
How did you test the intake manifolds for leaks?
That torn diaphragm will cause you grief and the home made air filter may, too.

I did not. I figured I didn't need to because I didn't separate them. And I just drilled out the mixture screw today so I'll do that next. And I just oiled the cable today so it's nice and smooth. It's worth mentioning that before it would only start with carb cleaner and now it won't start at all. Also that's how I tested the boots, I sprayed around them with carb cleaner

Air leak and maybe stuck slide. Do the thumb test on both of the carbs.

On the air cleaner side is a large opening at the top. Lift the slide with your finger, hold your thumb over the opening, let the slide go and see if it falls fast or very slow. If fast the diaphragms are shot, if slow they're going bad, very slow they're usable. The bike won't run with bad ones and crappy if they're going bad. You can also see if one or more sticks.

Update: I ran outside and for giggles I cranked it. And it fired right up! I let it run for a minute after unhooking the charger (took it off before attempting to start) I shut if off for a bit to open the garage door, I hadn't before because I didn't expect it to start. Then I went and tried it again and nothing. I did your test and they booth fell pretty sluggishly. Not the slowest but also not the fastest. I'm also getting tiny little pops out of the carbs

As previously mentioned make sure your cables are adjusted so that there is a little slack at idle. In other words if you're cables are too tight it wont be able to come down to idle.

Thanks for that, I've checked that before but I think it'd be worth running out and checking again.

Yet another update: I got it to fire up with the choke on and I took it around the block a couple times and when I got back it started up again (where on a streak!) but when I turn the choke off it shoots up in rpm. I'll post a vid tomorrow so you guys can get a better view of what's going on. Also a lot of crackling and a backfire.

Your idle circuit is plugged.
When you have the carbs off bench sync them.
The idle speed might be a bit high.
Also look into new carb boots.
Cv36 and cv34 carbs use the same slide/diaphragm.
