Z1R pilot jet difference U.S. / Canada was created by Tripleted
Looking at the parts catalogue, there are different style pilot jets if or the Canadian and U.S. Models. They are the same size one type is typical short pilot and the other type is over an inch long.....Why?

No rea;l clue about this - but probably something to do with the different emission laws of each country? Maybe the length of the jet has an impact on how clean the motor runs and on pollution levels? Anyone...?

Hi Bill, how's that D1 coming along.

Between 1978 and 1980 there were many different types carbs fitted to different markets, quite confusing really.

Correct me if wrong, don't the USA carbs have the accelerator pump fitted (to assist initial throttle opening) and the Canadian one's have the plastic limiter cap fitted? which would need a shorter pilot jet? All this was as you say Bill an attempt to combat Anti Smog/Pollution Laws.

We were very lucky here in Oz not to get any of the above crap fitted to our bikes.

G'day Ross - D1 was progressing ok but had a major setback with the engine repaint - see separate post on Z1-R engine re-paint.
To keep on the thread (sort of, anyway!) - stripped all the carb internals and about to send the bodies to a mate up in Sydonney for hydrablasting.
Got some carb O'haul kits and noticed that they come with 105 main jets. The ones fitted to the carbs (as bought) were 113 - no idea if they've been replaced by a PO at some stage
The manual indicates 107.5 as std with 102.5, 105, 110 or 115 as options.
Probably be fitting an aftermarket 4:1 zorst (stainless Delkevic) and intend to run the std airbox/filter, but without silencer as didn't
get one with the original basket case - anyone got one....?
Will probably try the 113 mains first to be on the safe side - any feedback on choice of mains would be great!

bugga about the paint Bill, as others stated PJ-1 be the go.

I recently set up a pig/barstardised KZ1000LTD 1978 which had el-cheapo K-Mart CR carbs by PO, standard bores, pistons, cams, points.

Purchased, stripped and cleaned a set Ozzie Z1R D1 carbs, played with jets but found best combo 105 mains (surprised me), 15 pilot (standard), needle 5CN15 (standard) and air screw at 1 1/8 turns, stock air box/filter element, no snorkel running on 95 OCT juice with Transac 4-2's, so basically same set up you'll have. The bit that threw me was down to 105 mains as it was running rich with 107.5's.

Unless your's has been bored out, l'd be surprised if you need jet changes, in the day when we had these old bikes new, don't think we ever changed jets at all when fitting 4-1's with stock air box.

Show-N- Go in Adelaide are good for jets etc.. if needed.

If your stuck for a snorkel, in about 6 months l hope to have avai reproduction snorkels for the Z/KZ 1000A1/A2 and Z1R's (same part), busy for a while organizing reproduction A4, A1, A2, Z650 and Z1R tail light lenses (without the built in USA side reflector), once that's done will tackle snorkels, my repo A4/A5, LTD snorkels turned out great.

Bikes need to be set up for the conditions they are going to be used in.
