Reinstallation adjust which first, sync or pilot?

Bike: '84 KZ750L (same as '83)

Just finished putting the carbs back in, after pulling them and cleaning jets/bowls etc, installing an in-line fuel filter, and getting valve shims.

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but a rich mix will die when I go from no choke to half choke (after about 10-20 seconds of running), correct? This is an enrichment circuit 'choke', not a true choke, but I'm assuming the troubleshooting for rich/lean is the same...

Anyway, which do I adjust first? Sync, or the pilot screws?

Also, with adjusting the pilot screws, will adjusting actually make a significant difference in idle? With 4 cylinders maintaining momentum, I can see it being hard to tune the pilots...

Get a manual. Bench sync the carbs per the manual. Adjust the pilots 1-1/4 out. If it won't run without the choke, lean condition or clogged pilots.

Hi drumstyx,
Probably too many overlapping questions to answer all at once.
Before you start tweaking the carbs it's important to go ahead and adjust the valves if they need adjustment.
Typically the pilot screw adjustment is performed before the sync adjustment.
Your question about a rich mixture may resolve itself once you get closer to proper tune.
Hope this helps.

I guess I was a bit scatterbrained at first there.

I have the manual, and it doesn't really describe the order of things.

I didn't separate the carbs, so sync will be at least as good as it was before (and the butterflies did appear to be equal on the bench).

Valves were just done. I was waiting for valve shims to come in before putting everything back together, but everything looks good now.

Rich mixture is easily a problem with the pilots. The manual says 2 turns out, but I seem to recall some were between 1 and 1 1/2 turns out when I pulled them out.

All I really needed to know was which came first, and I guess pilot can come first in this case, since it's obviously running too rich. I can always go back after syncing to make sure it's all good.

You will adjust the pilots before syncing and after to fine tune it. It is helpful to run it at about 1/8-1/4 throttle and listen to the exhaust while adjusting the screws. If everything is OK and there is still a lean miss or rich one, you can take it out with the screws. If you can't, there is still a problem.

You can go to Mikuni USA and they have all the information you need. They say to adjust the sdrews 1/4 turn at a time, waiting ten seconds between for the carb to "catch up".
