Newer owner of a kz1000 a2, has pod filters 4into1 exhaust rebuilt carbs. Adjusted the valves to spec. .05 to .10 Pilots are 17.5 air screws turned out 1/8-1/4 turns, was idling great and running a little rough previous to adjusting valves. Now it will only idle with the choke on(very roughly) also is spitting gas out of carb #1 with burst of white smoke. #3 carb is spitting gas not quite as much as the #1 carb. Still getting spark on all cylinders. Almost seems as if the cylinder is running backwards.... Any input would be appreciated. I got this bike in non running condition, seems as if every time I adjust something it opens up a new can of worms....

Recheck your valves. Should be .002-.004" Not jetted for pods or 4/1 exhaust. Start with #20 pilots and 125 mains.

.002 - .004? Everywhere I have looked says I should be within .05 - .1, this motor isn't a newer 998cc it's the older 1015cc. Also it was idling previously. A little rich, but idling smooth

When discussing valve clearances PLEASE say whether you're measurements are in INCHES or MILLIMETERS. Otherwise you will be talking apples and oranges with other posters. Ed

Sorry about that! I'm talking mm. An update on the carbs! I have the engine idling now (w/o the choke). I cranked up the idle, but I'm still getting fuel out of the intake side of them. When I open the throttle even more fuel spits from the carbs. Along with some white smoke which imo seems to be vaporized fuel. It's pushing out so much fuel its dripping from the pod filter!

1978 I'm starting to think I gotta get back into the valves.... Went back through the carbs and no issues what so ever.

Hello,
You said you were inside the carbs...I did not see where you had mentioned anything about float levels in the carbs. If the fuel level in the carbs is incorrect that could cause some issues. Easy to check with the clear tube.
Good Luck,
Ty

That much fuel?
I'm thinking too high float level too... or a couple main jets popped loose... etc.

Also, running a warmed up engine with the choke out is like pouring slightly metered fuel right into the intake port.
A super rich, blubbery mixture and rough running.

Damn, I feel dumb saying this. Figured it out! The shims I swapped out were .2 mm bigger rather than .02 mm. I take valvr staying open on compression pushing air/fuel out the other direction.... On to the next thing! Thanks for all your replys!
