Cracked Choke Tube
18 Mar 2015 15:03 - 18 Mar 2015 15:31
Finally identified (most likely) the cause of an issue I've been ignoring for a couple years since my original set of VM29s got stolen. On cold starts when I needed the choke, or rather enrichener, to start her she'd surge to about way too high then die unless I quickly turn it off and turn up the idle, which in turn would need to be lowered back down gradually as she warmed. Super annoying.
Looked more into it today and found a small fracture in #4's tube that draws up fuel for the starter system. The tube is fixed in the carb body, so it looks like replacing it myself is out of the question. Any recommendations aside from sending it down to Wired George?

Is the crack accessible enough to seal it with solder or JBWeld?

It is. I thought of that but wasn't sure if it was a good idea. Patton's blessing is good enough reason to give it a shot, though.
I am noticing now that the other three carbs have either smaller cracks or lines that look like the beginning of cracks on the same tube. I'll try some JB, but if that doesn't do the trick I'll send them down to the professional.

I have had to solder one together, it I would recommend that before JB weld.

Solder. I wouldn't put JB weld in a carb.
