KZ1000P-9 carbs

HI Guys.
I'm new to the forum. I have a 1990 KZ1000P-9 (ex San Diego P.D.).
I've spent a bit of time and money tidying it up over the last 12 months. It's had a full re-wire, new carb rubbers, new inlet rubbers, altered the rear sprocket from 41t to 38t (which has lowered my revs on the highway & improved my fuel economy), new recurve screen from Clearview Shields and still a list of little jobs to do.
Ever since I bought the bike, it has intermittently coughed-&-spluttered. I wasn't sure at first if it was a fuel or electrical problem, but the full re-wire has nearly ruled-out it being electrical. I'm now thinking it could be the idle jets that might need de-coking. Has anyone else had this problem and are they susceptible to this?

Sounds like it's lean. What do your plugs look like?

Plugs are clean, not sooted or anything untoward. I put a new set in when I re-wired it.

Hello, Yorkie in the UK, and WELCOME to KZr!

If an imperfect pilot circuit in either or both carbs is causing the problem, it may result from clogged orifices through which the air/fuel mixture enters the carb bore.

The following pics illustrate one means of cleaning the pilot circuit.

Can you put up a pic. They can be hard to read if you don't know what to look for.

i had that problem on mine one of the hoses going to reed valves was split letting air in ,i removed all the smog stuff put a pipe accross the two reeds removed the small pipes going to carbs plugged the vacumes up on them plugged air box hole up, also ajusted the pilot screws on front of carbs to 1 3/4 turns out because they do run lean from factory ,you might have to remove the plugs covering them up
she runs good now also try lubing auto advancer
