I haven't heard anything good about 28mm carbs, say 29mm smoothbores are super hard to find, need fixed when you do find them, CR Specials are new, but still need tuned on...would a fella use 2nd gen 28's or 26"s ?

I ran my 28's for 25 years. The only problem was the outside linkage. There's a little tab that connects 1/2 3/4 together. It can get weak and the linkage sticky. I only changed them when I got my 33's. Not a lot of difference. At least not earth shaking.
I still have my 28's.

Nice little bike. Mikie had one. He abused it then traded it for a bag. I'd like to have bought it from him but I was a single parent at the time. I should have given him $200 for it, fixed it and saved to overhaul Bossie.
Shoulda, woulda, coulda.

Do the carbs in question have covers with 2 screws or covers with 3 screws?

The later 28s held sync better than the early ones. I have a really nice set of 29s that are ready to bolt on and ride, if you are interested. No stripped threads. Ready to ride.
