It Started ! was created by kzdcw
Finally after working on my Non-Running 77' KZ1000A I purchased last year, it's Running. Rebuilt and mechanically adjusted the stock VM26 carbs completely per FSM. Purchased a new Vance & Hines 4 into 1 exhaust and am using the KN Dual Filter Pods. I re-jetted the Carbs. using #20 Pilots and #120 Mains. Raised the Needles 1 Notch and backed out the Fuel Mixture Screws 1 1/2 Turns. Biked started right up and idles good.

Question, the bike when when idling doesn't seem to respond well to quick throttle inputs maybe like it's starving for fuel and returns back to idle slowly?

Any Recommendations you Tech Guys may have?

Other than that, I'm tickled to death it's running since 1988 !

Check the plug at idle. Run it to half throttle riding it in 5th, shut it down and coast to a stop, Check plug. Pour it on until you get as fast as legal, shut it down, coast and check the plug again. It might need more or less fuel at these settings.

Unfortunately the bike is not road worthy yet, a lot of other things ( tires, chain, etc. ) to replace before it can be ridden.

Which direction would I turn to the idle mixture screw to combat the symptoms I described above?

You turn it one way or the other 1/4 turn to see if there is a change. If it starts running faster, that's the direction you want to go. Wait ten seconds before turning again so it can catch up. Get all to the highest point, lower the idle and fine tune it again. The carbs might be sticky and you really can't dial them in without it being under load. What color are your plugs?
Have you adjusted the floats?

Turning the pilot mixture screw out counterclockwise enrichens the pilot circuit.

Conversely, turning the pilot mixture screw in clockwise leans the pilot circuit.

Good Fortune! :)

Are your mixture screws before the slides (air cleaner side) or after. If before, the settings are reversed. Post pics if you can.

Maybe it needs a bit more fine tuning on the carbs. Try raising and lowering the needle and see what happens. Slow to come back to and idle might mean the slides are sticking in the carb bore from varnish build up. If you are going to change the clip position you will have everything apart to clean the bores and slides and then see if they stick. It only takes one slide to stick.

Steve, My Pilot Mixture Screws are Intake Manifold Side ( Front of the Carb. facing the intake manifolds ).

I thought when you try to open the throttle slightly and slowly and it take a brief moment to respond then returns to idle slowly when letting off the throttle would mean that the idle circuit or Pilot circuit is LEAN ?

If that's the case I'm assuming you would want to Enrichen the Fuel Mixture but thought would be done by turning ( IN ) the Mixture Screw?

I already set the Mixture Screw at 1 1/2 turns out as a starting point.

You may have a vacuum leak. Check it with carb spray or WD 40. Turning it out richens it but not enough. Don't jump around. One thing at a time.

Normally vm26 run on 17.5 or 15 pilot jets
My 77kz1000 carbs use 17.5 and 120mains

Pulled the plugs I was using which where old ones that I re-gapped and cleaned. They were very dark. So I purchased New plugs ( NGK B 8ES ) and installed . I originally had the fuel mixture screw back out 1 1/2 turns. I now adjusted them to 1 turn out. Seems to run and idle better now.

I know the bike would probably run much better with new Plug wires and Coils as well as New points. But for right now using the Old ones. I did however test them per FSM and adjusted accordingly.
