Question about 28mm pumper carbs

18 Jun 2014 15:00
#637103
I found a set of rebuilt 28mm carbs with the external acc. pumps for my 76 900 for $485. Seller will jet them for my application. Bike is basically stock except for a header, K&N's and dyna elec ingition. My goal is to just have a good runnin and good idling bike for the street. I just wanted some feedback from kz owners that are runnin these carbs before i purchase them. Any known issues with them? Thanks.

Thanks for the reply Pete. So $485 is too much? Most 28's i found for sale were in the 150 to 200 price range and they needed rebuilt so i thought 485 was a fair price for a rebuilt ready to run set. The seller is Redline cycles, i called and spoke to Jim today and he guaranteed me a rebuilt & jetted set for my bike, $508 with the shipping.

Jim rebuilt my motor on my 80 LTD 1000, & talked me into getting Mikuni RS 34 s ,A nice upgrade for my bikes performance, for my bike that has a 1075 kit in it & he bought the 28 pumpers that were on my bike that were jetted for pods & header for 125.00, Jim is a great guy to deal with, & very knowledgeable guy, when it comes to these old Kaw's, but he is in a business to make money, Try giving Peter1958 a P.M.. I believe he has many sets of 28s & can help you out, if not, you can always P.M.
Brian @ ...kz10006
P.S. DONT mention this conversation with Jim, don't want to loose him as a friend & some one I can call for advise !!
Pete, & good luck !!

I read a write up on Larry C's site a while back(just checked and couldn't find it) but the general gist of the write up was that the 28s are a great set of carbs for a stockish engine. They are close to the 29 smoothbores in size, and offer an accelerator pump. I just purchased a set that needs rebuilt, because I was sold after reading the article. I'm sure that I will end up with 3-400 bucks wrapped up in them by the time they are dialed in. Bear in mind that doesn't even begin to cover the hours that I will have into rebuilding/tuning them. And there will be many hours if the vm26's are any indicator!
Mine:
04 Honda rebel 250(wifes)
04 GSXR 750(bolt on galore)
98 CBR 600F3(filter, pipe, adjustable cam sprokets, dyno tune)
76 KZ900A (LTD gauge pods, crash bars, LTD(style)pipes, dyna coils and ignition, headwork and mild port cleanup by cavanaugh racing, K&N filter pods, heck I dunno.

I liked the pumpers on my '79 MKII - when I parked it for half a day I'd jump on, give the throttle a couple of quick twists, fire her up, and ride away without choking it. Like has been said - good carbs for a stock-ish engine.
My wife asked me if I still loved her - I said "Honey, I love you more than new carburetor boots ! "

considering a nice rebuild on a set of 150.00 pumpers is going to run you $350.00 i don't feel like the price is to high.

i have ran 28mm accelerator pumps on several different versions of kz 1000 engines and have always been very pleased with them.

you can't go wrong there as far as i am concerned.

68dave, like every one said ,28 pumpers are a nice upgrade on a stockish motor ,good performance & pretty much trouble free, just saying, if you're not in a big hurry, shop around or put up a post in the wanted section of this forum

Thanks for the responses everybody. So i decided to purchase the carbs from Jim @ Redline cycles. I called and spoke to him yesterday about availability, price & shipping and he told me $509 shipped to my door and he never mentioned me having to ship back a set of core carbs until i received a email from him this afternoon. This may be a deal breaker for me.

I sent Jim a email that he didn't mention a core and he quickly responded that because he didn't mention the core during our phone conversation regarding the price that he will waive it for me. I like that he resolved the issue so quickly so i'm gonna go ahead and make payment for the carbs.
