airbox question 1980 kz 1000
19 Jan 2014 22:34 - 19 Jan 2014 22:35
I am trying to take my modified 80 kz 1000 from its present state back to stock. It has vance and hines 4 into 1 exhaust.Airbox removed, pod filters, 1 of which is missing.I do not know what jetting may have been done.I will have to research and see what stock jets sizes were used and replace them.I do not know how much bigger jets would need to be for the vance and hines.I also wondered if the jets happened to be right for the exhaust, would I mess uo the whole airflow thing with using a stock airbox. Also, I am new to the kz bikes, and have found many airboxes on ebay for sale.Does police or dragbike have a different size carb than others?I do not know what size carbs my bike has.I will post a picture here soon.I need a lot of help with this.I have a set ofstock exhausts with headers for 4 into 2 setup, but it would really be easier if i could leave the v&h on.Thanks for input.

You will be fine using the stock airbox with the V&H header, although you will have to rejet. Some close up photos of the carbs would help people help you with your questions, as well as what 1980 model you have. Im guessing you have an LTD?

I found out my bike is an 81 ltd,not 80 model.I will post a picture here.It is too cold to roll the bike out today.I read where the stock main jets are 127.5.Once I get the airbox, I need to do what, increase the main jet size to about 135? I will have to pay to have this done, I do not know how to work on carburetors. And are those the only jets that need to be changed? Thanks for your help.

I will not go back to a stock exhaust now!
BS34 carburetors:
Stock 37.5 pilot jets
122.5 main jets (one step larger than stock 120)
Jet needle-stock, in stock-position
Ready for Spring!

Such a nice complement. She's best when clean...squeaky clean, that is.
I tried frugal...forget it. Take time and do it right. Install Genuine Kawasaki parts, gaskets, etc...with few exceptions.
The color: luminescent Red (from the factory) is way-cool in certain light, especially when the sky is pinkish-orange.
I love the way those massive, beautiful engines are just...all out-there for the world to see!
