Jet kits?

I have a '79 KZ1000, upgrades include Dyna coils, wires, and ignition. K&N individual pod filters, and K&N oil filter. 4 into 1 sidewinder exhaust, and Kerker pipe with no baffle.

I currently have a stage 1 jet kit on my mikuni 28 carbs. I was wondering, should I upgrade to a stage 2, or stage 3 jet kit? My bike runs well, and idles just OK now.

What are the benefits of upgrading my jets in my carb to a stage 2, or 3?

If you had this same set-up, which jet kit would you go with?

How will going to a stage 2, or stage 3 jet kit affect my gas mileage, and put-puts around town?

If it was me, I'd do a ton of searching on this site and re-jet using the suggestions that I found and save a bunch of money over a jet kit.

A normal set up would be either 2.5-3 turns out on the stock pilot or 1 size larger and a couple steps up larger on the main. Perhaps shim the needle if needed. Done!

IIRC, your engine is the only KZ with VM carbs that DynoJet makes a kit for.
Your bike is on the needle most of the time, and DynoJet claims they spend the bulk of their time refining the taper of the needle for maximum performance. Since you already have the needle, all you need are larger main jets. 2-3 sizes might just do it.

My 1000 came to me with the Dyanjet Stage III kits installed. Mine has 145 mains and stock pilots I believe from going over my paperwork. According to the cross reference my Dynojet 145's equal to a 131 main jet. My bike is setup the same as your's, but has MTC 10.5 pistons on a stock bore. My carbs are 28 pumpers and work well.

Serpent7, in case you don't know, DynoJet uses a different numbering system on their jets. So it sounds like you can get OEM jets in 130 to do the trick, or 145 from DynoJet. Not sure on the price of OEM jets, but I believe the DynoJet jets are $2 each.

So…. (and I'm new to the carb scene) All I heed to do is purchase the main jets in either 131, or 130 (oem), or Dyno Jets 145's and I'm at a stage 3 jet kit? How many main jets do I need?

You would need 4 main jets. Mine is equal to a 131, but they only come in increments of 2.5 so if stock jets are used it would be a 130 or a 132.5. Mine has added compression so you shouldn't need quiet as big as mine I would think. Once you run it hard you are supposed to shut the engine off and check the plugs to make sure they are not too lean. Too much idling and you can't read the plugs. You would probably come in at around a 120 to a 125(stock jets, not Dynojets) I am guessing.

What size are in your's now?

Yes, that would put you at a Stage 3 kit. Personally, when I am targeting a particular number, such as 145, I prefer to go ahead and order the size below and above, just in case. You will end up with 12 unused jets, but you will be able to fine tune it without waiting for more jets to arrive if 145 is not the perfect number.
