I have the same issue. 1982 440 LMT running lean. I just the bike in trade for some labor. I noticed it had K&N filters instead of the factory box air filter. I figured the less restrictive filter was allowing a leaner mix.

I ended up dropping the bike off to a mechanic i have known for years and it wrapps out great and purrs like a kitten. And with baffles and a few more inches on the exhaust I can now hear myself think (just big thoughts. It still overcomes the tarter sauce thoughts). He told me what he did but, I was so excited about it going I didn't retain anything.
