I know the floats need adjusting because the carbs are rebuilt... but how do you do it? The instructions I've seen in my Clymer basically state you have to assemble, then check, then disassemble, adjust, and reassemble, start all over. Is there an easier way?

Start by doing the clear tube test (see link below) to determine if any adjustment is required. Ed

The carbs are already off the bike... do they need to be mounted on the bike to test?

No, they don't need to be on the bike. Some folks have screwed an old set of carb holders to a board and installed their carbs on the board, clamped it in a vise or Work-mate, and leveled it up, and then performed the clear tube test. This made it easier to get to the floats to make any necessary adjustments. Ed

I just did mine on the bench just make sure your holding then nice and straight both ways when checking.
Was a pain to me too, lotta draining and re checking but worked out. All mine were right at the top of the bowl (a little high)so I had to bend the tab a little on all 4. Got em all pretty good the first time (bottom fourth of the bowl) except for one which I had to do twice.
I appreciate 650ed, Patton etc etc for pushing this, checking this because it was something I put off for a long time.
