Guide or rule of thumb for pods / jet size?

Hey all, I was wondering if there was a guide or a rule of thumb for using pods and the corresponding jet size. I'm VERY new to carbs, I only barely understand how they work. I've been struggling to find a good place to read up on them, if anyone has a link I would love to read more. Also, where does everyone buy their carb repair kits / jet kits / parts from? Thanks!

You need to add the year and model of your motorcycle to your signature line. Does the bike already have pods on it, or are you about to put them on and learn all about carbs in the process? If you want some interesting reading on the subject, go to the following link and read about some extensive testing and tuning.

you need to listen to reason and ride the thing before you tune it up that much so you can get used to it. learn to walk before you fly.

Signature changed, sorry about that, never got around to it. The bike in question is the 440, and it does already have pods on it. I got it in pretty bad shape from a guy who knows less about bikes than I do. I want to verify that he's not a complete idiot and did change the jets / buy a new kit to make sure it's done right.

@ Donthaveakawman, I can handle quite a bit more than this 440, regardless of what you put in it. I learned to ride before I learned to walk.

is the exhaust free flowing to keep up with the air filters?

The rule I have read is for pods, add one or two on the pilot jet and MAYBE go up one on the main. If you add low restriction pipes, add one or two on the mains. It all depends on how the overall airflow of the system is going.

That said, it will never run right again.

Assuming your KZ440 still has the original CV carbs I would recommend trying to find the stock airbox. Ed

If your PC is similar to mine you can hold down the Ctrl key while you hit the + key and the image will enlarge each time you hit +. I tried this on OMR's posting and the test is pretty clear even when magnified. (Hit Ctrl - or Ctrl 0 to shrink it back to normal size). Ed

Thanks a lot for all the replies! I ordered a sync kit and am going to try and see if that fixes it, I just have no idea if the PO knew what he was doing and if the jets are correct or not.

@ donthaveakawaman As far as I can tell, the exhaust is stock but it sounds like he removed the baffles, its really quite loud!

@ bountyhunter I would like to run the stock airbox but I don't have one (PO was an idiot) and I can't find one online for anything short of a small fortune.

@OldManRock Great post, really informative, thanks a bunch, just one more question, where do you buy jets from? Are they a universal part or are they Kawa/Honda/Yamaha specific?

@ 650ED I think the carbs are stock, not 100% sure.

from what I understand the jet kits make it easy to foul out a plug for example if you give it a big rev and then slow down the spark plugs will get coated in gas and you will be dead in the water for a bit. other upgrades are necessary with a jet kit such as the ignition and exhaust.
