I picked up an 83 gpz 750 about two years ago.The bike has sat until about three weeks ago. I cleaned the carbs, went to bigger jets, and put a 4 into 1 on it. The air filter pods did not arrive yet, could the fact that I don't have the pods on yet be the reason it's not starting?? Because if I put my hand over the end of the carb where the pods would go, it behaves like it wants to fire up. Is this a carb problem or something deeper than just carbs? I am new here, but nothing new bout spinnin a wrench. I am open for all suggestions.

Checked float levels? Had anything else apart? example;intake boots on head. Choke on when trying to start? Give us a good rundown of all you have done. Battery charge will make a difference too.

I have fuel in my bowls, as for the intake boots they were not touched. The pilot jets are now 42.5 and the mains are now 135. Has fresh battery with charger hooked up when needed. I probaly should have soaked them(the carbs)but they are painted black,so I just sprayed them with gummout carb cleaner. I have good spark with new ngk b8es.

Do not try to start the bike or turn on the key when it is attached to the charger. That can damage the bike's charging / ignition systems. Ed

Thanks for the info. I think I'm gonna clean the carbs one more time. The small artery that fuel travels thru from the bowl to the carb had the most corrosion. Can I use a small piece of wire for that?

thats what i did and it worked fine. small wire and more carb cleaner. and then checked the air passing thru those ports with compressed air. you should be able to see/feel the exit port in the carb throat. couldn't get my pilot jets to break loose or i woulda swapped them also.

Sounds like it is starving for fuel. When you cover the carbs and it wants to fire it is working like a choke but to an extreme. I would try an alternative fuel to get it running. Spray some brake parts cleaner or carb cleaner in and see if it runs.

Lack of air filters will not stop it from running.

I had same problem, I took the plugs out one at a tme and sprayed WD-40 into the cylinder 1 and then did the same for cylinder 2 but sprayed a little less than on cylinder 1 and then cylinder 3 gets less than 2 and cylinder 4 gets less than 3 this way they are more or less all have the same fuel with evaporation. This got the carbs working.

I have a 1980 Kawasaki KZ750 Ltd. I bought new. I recently managed to get it out of my garage after 28 years and put it on the road again (2010). I feel like a kid all over again. Since I have acquired 3 78 KZ1000 Ltd, 1 1981 KZ1000 Ltd, and another 1980 KZ750 Ltd. Love the LTD's.

Hey guys thanks for the input,I cleaned the carbs AGAIN. When I put them back on the bike has gotten closer to starting. So I'm going back to the shop later this evening to clean them again with the carb cleaner and wire. I'll let y'all know how that goes.

Once again Thanks.

check to see if the choke is fully operational, mine has gotten the fuel hose in the way before and the lever will go up but the choke won't close.

Ok so the bike fired right up multiple times. Though it only starts and idles with the choke open, it does start and run. When I try to hit the throttle, or close the choke it wants to shut off. I think I will clean them again and blow them out according to the diagram that Patton posted.

Thanks.
