cold weather vs carburetor was created by Freekz1000
Hi,

I live in MN and am working on a 1978 kz1000 that my neighbor gave me, hence the login name. I got it running after reassembly, I completely tore it down and had the frame powder coated, lots of new parts, it's been really fun!! What does cold weather around 32 degrees do to a carbureted motorcycle? I took it down the road and it ran fine at first but lost power and died after about a mile. I boiled all the jets and cleaned the carbs, it idles very nice but doesn't like the cold. is this typical?

No not typical, have you done any mods to the engine. 4 into 1 pipe, pods filters ect. If you put it together all stock it should run fine.

+1 My bike loves cold weather more than I do. It runs very well on the cold, dense air. Ed

cold weather is great if you can hold some traction, I actually think the cold air makes more power for the intake. I am going to get my eyes checked I am coming down with a case of detached retinas.

I wonder if I could use the stock intake boots as airhorns for my carburetors

The exhaust is stock, I did put pod air filters on it. It probably needs to have a richer mixture huh? can I do that without re-jetting? Thanks in advance.

Just curious - why did you install pods? Ed

The stock airbox went back on last night. I pulled the carbs and mechanically sync'd them. After reading up on it I found out that the pods are kind of a pain. We'll try that and see if it resolves the problem.
