Welcome to KZRider.
Did you do anything else to the engine as you stated in your post, tune up, valve adjustment...?

You said you fitted your carbs. Are you saying you fitted the new filters to your carbs, or did you actually pull the carbs and go through them?

Sounds like the old pods were somewhat stopped up. Also, you may be feeling a slight lean running condition from the pods down below 4500, that switches on like a light switch once you finally get on the main jets. :woohoo:

You said you replaced the points and set the timing. Did you by any chance lube the advancer while you were in there?

yep - I would think thats standard procedure. A light lube. then wipe off excess - refit. Seems that while you're in there that would be the right thing to do. BTW - advance seemed to be ok - not sticky or anything.

haven't pulled the carbs yet. But I have too soon - obvious overflow from #1 and #4. waiting for my friend to shim the valves...

yep you are on the right track...those things in that order

when you take older filters and put a finger inside to push out and reshape em ....if they have been grabbed and crunched before....and you try and touch em while installing they just return to crunched.. imo that is why they are like that the owner had one crunch and just shaped em all the same

Yeah, I was just taking a wild guess that maybe the advancer was not opening completely prior to it being lubed. Which may have been why it wasn't going past 4500 rpm. Once you it was cleaned and lubed all was good again.

when you pull the carbs and also when you do the valve adjust take pictures for us...one well lit pic set of the intake tracks and one of the cams and cam ends, one pic of the valve cover upside down/inside shot to see for clearance marks over the spinning lobes when installed ...folks will be able to chime in on the work that may have been done

oh cool! you Zeds are great! I'll do that this weekend. A friend is gonna shim the valves as long as I tell him how far they are out. Just finished fitting a set of used Vance&Hines pipes so next job is to rejet (after having a bend made to keep the tail pipe up a bit higher). It now sounds like some demon from hell - if people can't see me, they sure gonna hear me.
