Did you do anything else to the engine as you stated in your post, tune up, valve adjustment...?
You said you fitted your carbs. Are you saying you fitted the new filters to your carbs, or did you actually pull the carbs and go through them?
Sounds like the old pods were somewhat stopped up. Also, you may be feeling a slight lean running condition from the pods down below 4500, that switches on like a light switch once you finally get on the main jets. :woohoo:

Someone once told me to marry that motorcycle I was riding ......there's times I wish I hadda listened .

when you take older filters and put a finger inside to push out and reshape em ....if they have been grabbed and crunched before....and you try and touch em while installing they just return to crunched.. imo that is why they are like that the owner had one crunch and just shaped em all the same

cas.vanderwoude wrote: yep - I would think thats standard procedure. A light lube. then wipe off excess - refit. Seems that while you're in there that would be the right thing to do. BTW - advance seemed to be ok - not sticky or anything.
Yeah, I was just taking a wild guess that maybe the advancer was not opening completely prior to it being lubed. Which may have been why it wasn't going past 4500 rpm. Once you it was cleaned and lubed all was good again.
