Best carburetors? was created by mtbspeedfreak
Obviously there are many variables (cams, compression, displacement, nitrous, aspiration, etc.), but what's the best set of modern carburetors money can buy for these bikes, with money being no object [I wish...]?

Mikuni RS?
Mikuni TMR?
Keihin FCR?

How about stock-ish displacement and compression and street cams, possibly a street port?

Keihin CRS?
Mikuni 29 smoothies?
Mikuni 33 smoothies?

Id say for after market carbs the cr specials are the most cost affective, that is untill ol Larry develops a plug/play fuel injection system for these old beasts! :woohoo:

Can you run bigger carbs on a smaller engine with a restrictor plate? Say for example A z1 900 stock with cr specials.

The key with any modifications is you pick a matched set of components for the application you want.

The answers differ based whether this would be hot street, strip or road-race. For many of the carbs you WILL need the larger cc's, cams and head work to take advantage of them.

Pure performance versus streetable is a key difference. Big carbs, smnall engine and you get very soft low-end and good top-end.

For street driven bikes, Its hard to beat a CV's smoothness and forgiving throttle.
Setting up a set of smoothbores for an old Z can be a nightmare. There are soooo many variables.
These smoothbores need to be set up for the 900/KZ1000. Air cutaways on the back of the slides. Needles and jet needles vary.Pilot airjets and main air jets also. If they were drilled, even more problems. If you start modifying your engine, then you have to take account for what thats done to your intake flow ect...
Me personally, I'll have a streetbike or a drag bike. I'll slap the turbo on that biatch when Im ready to make speed.

Remember, don't work on your bike so much you never ride it.

CR29s should make a stock Z1 run pretty good, no? Aren't they basically a modern design of the Mikuni VM29s? [Please excuse my ignorance]

29's were the hotrod carb for those bikes. Slightly larger than stock.
Anything bigger on a stocker Z is almost too much carb. If you do go with some 29's which you can usually find for around 200 dollars, be sure to call sudco and order new needle jets and jet needles. No sense chasing hidden issues.
