25 May 2012 21:10 - 25 May 2012 21:16
Wondering whether it might be feasible to use the Z1 airbox in a KZ900?

I believe the reason the KZ airboxes were redesigned (from the Z1 style) was that air would flow through the box with less resistance (sorry for the non-technical answer) and the KZ boxes have a higher volume. Someone asked if they could mount a KZ airbox on a Z1 and the short answer was no because the side covers were different - you'll possibly run into that issue.
May I ask why you want to do this? Are the KZ airboxes reproduced?

The KZ900 airbox is scarce and difficult to find.
Was peculiar to the particular model.
Yippee! Found this earlier thread.

I know of a couple of riders that use the Z1 airbox on their A4's. Roy

I would be interested in your airbox for my '76 KZ 900 A4 if you still have it. Call: 814-333-6879
Thanks.

mtbspeedfreak,
No, I live near Meadville, PA about 40 miles due south of Erie, PA--but same area code as State College.
To update my last--all I really need is the silencer that fits on the back side of the airbox. If need be, I'd consider buying the entire assembly though to get what I need.

O.K. thanks anyway. I did find what I needed a little while ago from MOTOSPORTS.com--figured I'd better jump while the jumpin' was good--stuff is getting harder and harder to find.
Thanks again.

Well, back to the drawing board I guess. The company that told me they had the silencer for my 1976 KZ 900 airbox just emailed me and told me the silencer is no longer available and is discontinued. GREAT!!
Anybody know where I can find one--or know anybody that's fabricated one? My mechanic says I gotta do something to control the airflow. Right now all I've got is the airbox. Bike runs like crap. Goes on the bench tomorrow to see what he can do with it until I find/make a silencer.

I doubt the silencer is the cause of your crap running. A lot of people back in the day pulled them off and they ran great. Mine has run like that for 59,000 miles just fine. It was rejected to 120 mains for that, k&n filter, and exhaust. Chances are something else is wrong such as crap in the carbs or something. Just my .02
