Duralast Fuel Filter-Bad
01 May 2012 21:43
Last year I bought a Duralast FF7144DL fuel filter from Auto Zone. It has a clear plastic body with a paper filter element. Made in Isreal. I used it for about 3000 miles and decided to change it since I had the tank off. I noticed that the paper element came loose from the end of the filter body (internally) and was floating around not doing anything. Has anybody who has used this specific filter or similar had such a problem?
I like the clear paper type so that you can see whats going on and I believe the paper filters the best. This one measures about 1 3/4 long by 1 1/4 wide. The filter rests on top of #3 carb. Could be a combo of heat and vibration.

Ive never had much luck with paper filters after a few weeks on the bike. The last 5 I tried on different bikes all plugged up I guess from the gas. I dont use them any more, its not from dirt in the fuel, they just wont flow. I had to keep stoppping & let them catch up to get home

It's probably the Ethanol(Alcohol) in the gas, affecting the glue holding the filter together. This crap they've forced on us is really affecting engine operations. My understanding the boating people have got an exemption from using Ethanol in their boats from the EPA.
Ethanol has an affinity for water, water and the gas filter elements do not work together well....

I just rebuilt my carbs and I'll be more than a little pissed if I have to do them again so soon over a busted filter.
What made me notice it was it being slightly deformed from heat and a hose pulling it slightly to the side and deforming one of the ends. I was concerned it was brittle and would break. That was not the case at all. I tried snapping the old one, not even close. Thats when I noticed the internal filter was apart. I opened the filter with a pair of diagonal cutters, It took some doing. It appears the body is made of polycarbonate or some such plastic. Very tough stuff. The insides suck though.
Ethanol?...DAMN THEM, DAMN THEM ALL TO HELLLLL....

Ethanol In Gasoline Problems
Certain materials commonly used with gasoline may be incompatible with high-level ethanol blends, causing them to degrade and contaminate the fuel. Metals that have been shown to degrade over time in the presence of high-level alcohol blends include brass,(floats & jets) lead, zinc(carb bodies) and lead-based solder.
Nonmetallic materials that degrade when in contact with ethanol include natural rubber, polyurethane, cork gasket material, leather, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) polyamides, and certain thermoplastic or thermoset polymers.
On the other hand, unplated steel, nickel-plated steel, stainless steel, black iron and bronze have shown resistance to ethanol corrosion, with nonmetallic materials like reinforced fiberglass, Buna-N, Neoprene rubber, polypropylene, nitrile rubber, Viton and Teflon meeting acceptable usage standards with E85.

This car filter does not allow fuel to flow after sitting for awhile. This filter is about a month old. This filter is being sold under several brand names. In order to get it flowing, I have to pressurize the tank slightly. These only started doing this in the last 5 years or so. Prior to that, they worked fine.
The video shows the tank in the prime position. The cap is open. The tank is about 3/4 full. The fuel only starts to flow after pressurizing the tank.
I'm afraid that paper filters, as good as they are, just will not allow enough flow without fuel pump pressure.

I've been using the clear sintered bronze (?) filters from Z1E, but the plastic has softened... the ends are bendy. It was installed last fall.
Dang it! There's one on my auxilliary fuel tank hanging on the wall. I'm going to swap it although I have no problems with flow through the paper filter.

I use the chrome take apart filters from Custom Chrome on my bikes that have the room. They are bronze inside and cleanable. The ones I had problems with are shown in loud hvx's post

Might as well switch over, the paper ones just dont work any more. I limped home 3 times on my Gs1100 thinking I was having coil problems. It would run around town when the filter was brand new but when you got it up to 60 or so it would run out of gas. After a week it wouldnt even run around town.I Finally stuck a bronze Custom Chrome filter on and it was fine. It has to be the new gas, I used them for years with no problems
