Ok, I hope I'm not asking a question that gets asked far too often but I am new here and I did do a little digging...just didn't find the answer i was looking for. I just picked up a 98 KZ1000-P and right off the bat it was missing a petcock...No problem i ordered a Pingel and installed it asap. Everything ran like i would expect out of bike that hasn't been started in almost a year except for the fact that my air filter caught fire haha. Looked at the floats in the carb and sure enough, every one of them are hard to move. I pulled the carbs and i will be cleaning them in the next week or so. Ok so heres my actual question, I found a guy selling some racing exhaust for a kz. Its a 4 to 1 no baffle and he also has the K&N pod filters. Everything is only $140 so Im ready to jump all over it. While I have the carb off, am I going to have to change the jets or would it be rideable with the stock jets? Am I getting too much performance parts and getting in way over my head on this? This is my first real bike but I am most definitely mechanically inclined so changing jets is not a big deal...just a money issue. I looked at the dynojet kits and its a $130 but they don't actually say it is for a 98' KZ1000, it only lists the production years and not the police bike. I would really appreciate any feedback you guys can offer. Thanks in advance!

There could be clearence issues with an aftremarket exhaust on a police bike.

There's no reason to use pod filters unless you are in desperate need of many "quality" hours with your carbs. Getting them properly jetted and adjusted can be a lengthy and frustrating process that will gain you little if any benefit. Type the word "pods" in the search box and grab a six pack or three.

I have pods and a 4-1 exhaust on my kz750. I got a jet kit (yes it will be needed) from 6 sigma racing. Tell them what bike you have, what mods, and the primary altitude you ride at, and they send you a kit with instructions. I followed the instructions as they were written, and have had no carb/fuel delivery problems at all. Though, I'm not sure about the clearance for the exhaust on your police bike as mentioned above. If you check and the exhaust will fit, I say go for it! :D

Welcome aboard, but you need a little help with your digging skills. Go to this site's "Search" function and enter the word "pods." There are 1,164 postings on the subject - short answer - yes you must change the jets, and if you're lucky you may get it to run as well as it does with the airbox.

Are these pods you are talking about the same as say...K&N air filters or are they a different animal?

It's a term used for both K&N and the other foam air filters, as they are both "Fun" to tune for.

Ok wow great responses everyone...and fast too lol! Ok to clarify they are brand new in box k&n pod filters. I don't know the brand of the exhaust but he said they are drag racing pipes. I sent him tons of pictures of my bike and exhaust and he said everything looks exactly the same as what is on his bike so it "should" fit. The exhaust is only $45 so I'm not too concerned. The pod filters are $100 tho and I don't want to just throw money away if it is just a waste of time. I would really like to remove the air box though. It's huge, and if I could move my battery there I could lower my seat (with a bit of frame modification). So the general consensus is get the exhaust but ditch the pods? Without a baffle on the new pipes I would STiLL have to get new jets tho right?

You'll have to rejet whenever you change how your engine breaths,ie.pods freer flowing exhaust etc...
Run a baffle, without it you will lose some low end torque and throttle response even when jetted for that.
The motor has plenty of horsepower to get you in trouble but low speed opperation will suffer from an open exhaust system.

If I get this 4-1 racing exhaust would a muffler shop be able to put something together for me? If so any idea what something like that would cost?

Is the pipe your looking to buy for drag racing(primary pipes exit on the right side of engine instead of under it) or a regular 4 into 1?
