i picked up a z1 classic from a storage sale. it hasn't been on the road since the mid eighties. po had removed the airbox and stopped there. airbox and sensor are gone. i figure he had fi trouble and started working on it. i've read when the dealers/kawasaki had too many issues with the fi it was removed and converted to carbs. i have a 79 kz1000p and an 81 csr 1000. both are parts bikes. if i wanted to keep the bike 'period correct' what carbs would the dealerships/kawasaki have used?

If you want to keep period correct I would KEEP the fuel inj, although the early fuel inj was troublesome in my opinion that was the nicest LTD they made.

that bike looks really nice, and should be worth more in tact with EFI. The Airbox might be a bit hard to come by, but I have seen them on Feebay. the sensor would hopefully be part of that deal, if not I would believe, although I cannot confirm, that it would be shared with a car from the same period. The throttle switch also fits Datsun/ Nissan. I would get the EFI working, as I like Injection.
Its your bike do what you feel is right.
Welcome to KZR, and you will find several members here with that same bike, running fine.

Carbs were substituted for FI (if they couldn't get the bike running correctly) by factory-authorized dealerships. Wireman is correct: this would have been in 1980 or so and what would have been on other contemporary 1015cc bikes were Mikuni VM28ss. It is also possible that the early versions of Mikuni BS34 CV might have also been available...I'd go 28's personally.

Try to keep the FI if you can. You may be able to get parts from Redline Motorcycles who seem to have a love for theses bikes.
My Classic has now done 46k miles and it starts on the button, I have had it for around 5 years now but I don't know what other previous owners have had to replace on it to keep it ruunning.
It is worth much more with the original FI and should increase in value.
There aren't too many of these bikes around now although they seem to come up on Ebay fairly often. I would guess that ther are less than half a dozen (max) here in the UK.
I may have a copy of a Kawasaki FI troubleshooting manual that I could post at cost. I could maybe copy to pdf and send to anyone that wants one. Please all send me a pm and I will send after I return from hols at the end of September.

i just don't know anything about this bike and could end up replacing parts till i get to the 'box' and then not be able to find one. that's why i was leaning towards the period correct carbs. if i can source everything i'll stick with the fi. i still have it on my gpz and of course the c14.

Then for the Sensor, if someone could get the Bosch # off of there Sensor. it should be easy enough to cross to a 4 cylinder car.
