I thought the early 80's kz1000 cv carbs were all the same.

I think I meant gs1000.

The carbs that came on the "J" series heads were needled and jetted for a head and engine that flowed quite a bit more than the earlier engines. The 750 head flows about as well as the earlier 900/1000 head. The big difference are the needles and needle jets as I mentioned before. Those components are impossible to find by themselves and even if you could they are (were) priced out of this world. If the head is stock you will save yourself a lot of tunning headaches with the GPz750 Mikuni BS34 carbs. The KZ750(4) used Keihin CV34 carbs which were junk.

I have built quite a few of the BS34 Mikuni carbs over the years and learned to really love them. At the same time learned to hate the Keihins. I run a set of the Mikuni BS34s on my Built GPz1150 with .420 cams and oversize valves and flowed head and I will put my bike up against anything that runs smooth-bores on the street.

I'm up for that, GPz1150 vs GS1150 with mild Cams and 40mm Radial Smooth Bores for the "Street".

That is not an older stile head. That is still a MKII head from 1979-81. You should have no problem using the cv34 carbs. As I mentioned before, get a Mikuni set from a GPz750.

thats the same head as a 79-80 ltd or kz,unless he plugged the injector ports.
the 81 was the beginning of the j motors, differant head with bigger ports that came stock with the cv style carbs

I am sure it is not the FI head, how can I tell if it is the later head? Doesnt it drop the compression drastically? Require some sort of cam chain mod?

That is what the guy I bought it from said. His recommendation was get a set of smoothbores set up right. I think I am just scared because I have never used them before.

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationIf the bike/engine is mostly stock than the BS34s are great carbs. Here are some I found on eBay. These would be a direct bolt on. The spacing on them is exactly the same as on your head.
